The Post Office wants a piece of South Africa's online shopping space

Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, said a new long-term plan for the Post Office is to diversify its mandate into e-commerce, fintech, and digital government services.

Responding to a Parliamentary question from ANC MP Khusela Diko, Malatsi said the amended South African Post Office Act supports the strategy.

Hahahahahahahaha.... That's a funny one Solly.

You couldn’t get completely analog mail delivery right…now you want to enter digital e-commerce and fintech?

Jesus take the wheel.

Digital government services almost makes sense at least, not that there is any hope of that working either.

Haven't used the post office for anything in over two decades, certainly not going to start now irrespective of any law or restriction the current regime may put in place or renew for that matter. Nothing I send will ever be touched by the post office even if it means making sure packages weight a Kg.

Courier companies just need to add on a 10c surcharge per parcel and pouch, marked as SAPO surcharge, and simple send an EFT every year to SAPO with that, less an admin fee per parcel to add it. Should solve the problem, and if the admin fee just happens to be 10c per surcharge, so be it.
