New Mac Pro - anyone looking at getting one?

If I had a desk I probably would.

Being facetious. Cannot imagine there being a massive market for it locally. Wonder how many MP's were sold in South Africa, in total? Surely not more than a 1000?

One was sold to me. :) This new model sucks considering the amount of third party options the previous generation could accommodate. You could plug in Windows gaming cards, ESATA cards, PCI SSDs, USB 3 PCI cards, 4 SSD/HDDs with an optional 2 if you got rid of the DVD burner, BD burners etc. Oh well.

Ja. Been keeping an eye on the Macrumors site. Fair to say it's not popular with many. But cannot wait to start seeing all the accessories that this is going to produce. Granted - they might take a wait-and-see approach, but with so many complaining about external cables etc., the scene is ripe for a complete overhaul of external storage. Won't be surprised to see something come out that will incorporate the nMP design, and take care of all possible externals in one functional unit. Going to be interesting. If it works - Apple will again have caused an industry to change around it. If it fails - huge mistake.

Awesome dual Xenon processor setup with its bits and bobs. I would definitely not buy one for the asking price. Second hand refurbished pros are a lot cheaper.

I have to agree, it might look pretty but seems very impractical to me.

Whatever accessories we might see I suspect they will come at a premium due to the custom design. The previous model could use off the shelf components which are manufactured in high volumes & relatively cheap.

I reckon the previous Mac Pros have great chassis, my brother has had two so far and he has no intention of getting this new. He reckons he will keep his existing one for as long as he can and then go the Hackintosh route with a decent chassis.

Have one on order (via overseas) - 6 core, 64Gb RAM, 1TB SSD, Dual AMD FirePro D500 GPU's.

Pound for pound vs a PC build, I've figured the price is actually fairly comparable, albeit mainly because AMD are literally giving away their graphics cards, which heavily offsets Apple's steep markups elsewhere. Not that I'd use a a Windows PC anyway, I prefer to have a life ;)

Will be using it for high resolution photo processing and some video. Given that Photoshop, Lightroom etc dont utilise more than 6 cores (yet), I didn't see it feasible to go for an 8 or 12 core, knowing that the processors are indeed interchangeable (which silenced a lot of naysayers assuming Apple was to be welding them to the motherboard). I also decided to stick to the standard GPU config, because the ability to run six 4k monitors isn't exactly a priority for me!

In hindsight, I probably would have spec'ed the order even lower, and upgraded the SSD and RAM via a 3rd party source, but I impulsively pressed the Order Button. There is however the risk of warranty complications with the likes of OWC. It once took 4 months for them to replace a faulty RAM card I'd sent back to them. Good thing is with the new imported MP is that I can have it repaired locally under warranty, whereas this previously hasn't been the case with non-portable Apple computers.

As for the potential of a messy desktop with peripherals. Yep, it has me pondering, but I think with careful planning and organising this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

True, this machine is complete overkill for most people and no surprise they see the price as eye watering. I on the other hand have been patiently waiting for a much needed upgrade to my (now kaput) 2008 MP, so to me it's feasible.

Lucky bugger! Pop something up when it lands! Would be interested in hearing a local perspective!

Thanks, will do, I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces.

Mind if ask where you ordered it from? I'm thinking of ordering one myself but not many places ship direct to SA and with the price of these things you need to be able to trust the seller!

I ordered from the Australian Apple website and had it delivered to a friend there. He's coming over later next month and should be able to hide it in his suitcase :p

In the past I've ordered laptops in the states via parcel forwarding services, but it can be a bit of a shlep and there are the inherent risks involved.

If stuck to only buying locally, maybe you could try getting in touch with Lizzy at the www.rocketshop.co.za. She stocks parallel imported Apple products and may be able to sort something out for you. I've bought our last few iPhones off her and she's always on the ball with reasonable prices.
