So I know you guys probably get this question a million times, and I've researched it to the point of nausea but I just need some buying advice for my needs.
I'm looking to buy my first MBP. It appears that for the late 2013 Retina 15" Macbook Pro (which I'm looking at) my options are:
2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
8GB 1600MHz memory
256GB PCIe-based flash storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics
Built-in battery (8 hours
or
2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz
16GB 1600MHz memory
512GB PCIe-based flash storage
Intel Iris Pro Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory
Built-in battery (8 hours)
There's a roughly R7000 difference between the two so it's not a decision that I can make too lightly.
I'll be using it for the following.
Video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro and some light After Effects where necessary. The edits are cut from 1080p dSLR footage from the Canon 5D and 600D (T3i overseas, I believe) with all footage and media being run off a 4tB G-Tech drive.
Most edits will incorporate one or two splitscreens and text elements, a voiceover track and a music track.
I work full-time as an editor and use a 2011 27" iMac with 12GB 1066mHz RAM at the office. I generally have the program monitor set to 1/4 resolution because the timeline starts chugging if there are unrendered instances of film dissolve or reversed clips. I'm hoping the MBP can match or exceed the performance on my work computer.
In terms of work, the MBP will supplement my office setup for when I'm on-the-go or travelling abroad and need to get some cuts done. I have a relatively beast Windows based desktop at home which I'm not looking to replace. For the most part, I don't see myself hooking the machine up to an external display unless it were for presentations or media consumption.
In terms of play, I'd use the MBP for media consumption on the go, Internet stuff and light gaming (Starcraft 2/League Of Legends) or a flavour-of-the-week game.
I will also be using the machine for DJing (Traktor) and live performance of dance music (Ableton Live) as well as on-the-go production (Ableton Live/Cubase).
Battery life and portability are pretty important to me.
So where should I go? Base model or spec'd out?
I've thought about dumping a fair amount of cash into it for the sake of futureproofing, but then I've heard that that's really not the best way to go about things.
In 5 years time, the tech landscape may be so different, a spec'd out 2013 MBP might be worth very little or simply not be able to perform at the required level. I should therefore rather go for the middle of the road option and look at upgrading to a new machine in two years or so, hopefully with the aid of a decent resell value.
What do y'all think? Thanks so much for any advice. I've been going over this in my head since June and waited till the release of the late 2013 models in order to make my decision!
