Hi guys

Does anyone here know if the new MBP's hard drive is user serviceable like the white MacBook? I seem to remember something like that but now can't find where I read it and ifixit doesn't show the new ones yet.

There was a link in the other hdd thread that mentioned a guy who spoke to an apple genius who said it was user serviceable on the 17" - no firsthand knowledge though.

Hmm, that's specifically the 17" which has the hard drive somehow obstructed by the battery. I'm looking at the 15"

The 15'' is user-serviceable (jury still out on 17'' --- I agree it looks a *very* tight fit).
Replacing the hard drive is significantly easier on this machine than the previous MacBook Pro.

This machine uses the same, industry standard SATA notebook drives as previous MacBook Pro and MacBook models.

Aweseome, thanks! I'm looking at the prices, might as well go for the Pro now that I have to buy a new one. Amusingly, it is no longer cheaper for me to get it in or from the US. The US ex-vat price for the entry MBP is a mere £30 less than the inc-vat price in the UK.

Also amusing is that the 4GB RAM option works out cheaper than buying 4GB separately, which was not the case when I bought my MacBook.

Hi Koffie

Not sure if I understand you when you say "user serviceable" but I just picked up my new Macbook PRO 15 inch (2.53, 4gig) yesterday and there's one latch that opens a cover that gives you access to the hard disk and battery, to get to the memory is a bit more difficult that involves removing some screws, hope that helps.

PAYBACK thanks. I meant replacing the drive without having to perform the level of disassembly that will void the warranty. As far as I know the previous generation had to be taken a part quite a bit to replace the drive, thus voiding the warranty.

I'm not worried about the memory. *If* I get one of these, I'll just take the 4GB option. The price difference between the 4GB option and buying 4GB is pretty small. Upgrading the drive myself is a lot cheaper though, so I'd want to have that option.
