New "Monthly" packages from VC

I'm the wrong guy to ask about mobile voice rates, but I believe the general idea is that the longer you sign up (i.e. on a contract), the better deal you should get.

Most longterm contracts work this way, not just mobile.

Is the idea not to get contract pricing but NOT be locked into a 24 month contract?

Well, partly. I think people are uncomfortable with the opacity of the contract pricing. I know I have been since day one. My initial attempts at unravelling it were very effectively stonewalled.

The basic issue is, if I supply my own capital equipment (handset, card, modem, whatever) I should (a) not be tied to a 24 month contract and (b) I should not have to pay the part of the subscription that pays for the capital.

Obviously this also applies if I come to the end of the contract and I don't want a new phone -- I should then get a reduced rate and be able to continue on a month to month basis.
