A young girl at work is looking at buying a car - Hyundai i10 price range

I told her to look at low mileage (sub 20k) used cars as opposed to new - due to depreciation.

I've had 4 cars myself - 2 new and 2 used ... but would probably do a low mileage used for my 5th car.

The one thing that *would* make me buy new, would be getting the exact spec I want - which can be difficult used :/

Do you guys agree? Did you get your car new/used?

Used..

New is a ripoff...

Getting exactly what you want is a great thing, but its not worth the depreciation knock when you buy new.

Oh definitely used. I bought my car (demo model) and it only had 16 000 kms on the clock. As I was fortunate enough to buy it cash I got a decent discount as well!

100% Dolby...new ONLY if she has the cash and real finicky and want certain stuff like Sunroof, dual xenon etc....but if its just a runaround...cars that's at least a year old...coz that's the time when depreciation hits it the hardest.

Take for instance a 2009 MiTo...brand new was R249 000
Used, with 9000km's on the clock is now R209 000 lol...

Buy new...
Bought all my cars brand new. Colour of my choice, my specs and its new so no troubles...

second hand demo all the way...
test drove the i10 and i20....not bad for what you get..

I will never buy new again, unless I have buckets of money... I agree with everyone who says demo / 1 year old cars.

I have to agree. Also a demo / 1 year old probably has all the teething problems sorted out, and you still have the warranty for piece of mind. Bought a new car once....what a disaster. Will never make that mistake again, simply not worth it in terms of Rands and Cent.

You could look into buying something from the Tata range, you can buy a brand new one for under R100k, or you can look at a secondhand one for even cheaper! Just a thought...
