Happy New Year folks! :D

I'm about to get my very own PC & have been looking at quotes & weighing the option of buying & building versus a prebuilt unit.

Whilst browsing the forum I came across PC International & found that their Warrior PC special is a pretty good deal!

The Warrior PC specs are:

Intel Core i-7 2.6Ghz Quad CPU
Intel X58 SO MB w/ Intel X58 Performance chipset
8GB DDR3-1333 RAM
1TB(1000GB) SATA II- 7200RPM HDD (3Gb/s- 32MB Cache)
14-1 Internal Card Reader
Coolermaster Gladaitor Chassis w/ 650W PSU
DVD Writer 22x/12x SATA Dual Layer (8.5GB)
Onboard 8 Channel Sound
1GB ATI Radeon 4890 DDR5 VGA Card
24" Wide Samsung LCD TFT Monitor (2494HS)
Logitech 1500 Rechargeable Wireless KB & Mouse Set
Logitech 5.1 Speakers (5 Satellites + Sub ) X-530
No OS Included

I'm going to change the case to a CM HAF 932 & leave out the keyboard & mouse combo. I also want to load Windows 7 on it.

Anyway what I would like to know is, is the above deal worth it? Should I switch the 4890 card for a Nvidea 275 card? A few ppl have told me to get a card or to wait for a DX 11 card. But I dont see how that would make much of a difference to me yet. Should I wait?

Lastly having never used a Huntkey PSU, are they any good? Is that a decent Mobo?

Well if you can afford a 295 you can afford a 5970/5870. So you can change your vga card to that. I would also look at buying gigabyte/asus/msi etc for your mobo and not intel.

i7 is triple channel so you will want 6 gb or memory or 12 gb i think :D.

I agree about the mobo part.

Woops that was meant to be the 275 card not the 295. :o

Any reason why to choose Gigabyte/Asus/MSI over Intel?

Stay away from Huntkey PSUs. Rather spend a little more on a Corsair or Vantec for a little less

what you should do is see what the cost would be to source those items yourself, just to see if you could save some cash here and there to use for the odd better component.

Cool beans thanks for the info guys & great tip Mephisto. Think I'll do that.

Could someone recommend some sites to compare or get PC parts from please?

At the moment I know of Prophecy Take 2, PC International, PC Zone (Durban) & Rectron. Are there any others?

Because they are better than Intel boards. Intel has a pretty bad rep when it comes to their motherboards and I myself have seen a good couple of failures.

teh others also tend to overclock easier

Try www.crowntech.co.za

I've bought from them and the service is outstanding. Great prices and selection too..

The Asus P6T Deluxe boards are awesome X58 mobo's. Very easy overclocking, and if you screw up with the overclock, just hit reset and you're back in the bios to fiddle some more. Some boards require you to jumper reset the bios if the overclock is not taking, or to remove the cmos battery to force a reset. I've never had an issue like that with an ASUS board. (and you're gonna wanna overclock that 920. It gets to 3.8ghz easy)

Also, a +1 to putting the pc together yourself. You'll save a bit, and maybe you could spend that on a nice aftermarket cooler like a TRUE 120, which is +-R800.

Also its nice to build the pc yourself, do the cable management properly (which is great in the HAF 932), and have a good feel for the layout of the system and cooling.

I think that 1156 and a Core i7 with 8gb RAM will cost at least R1000 less and you get the same performance. It overclocks well with a good cooler and a bit of overvoltage. Try to get an ATi 5850.

I recommend PC Int and Esquire, as well as Prophecy, Sybariic and Landmark PC.

it may well be a South Africa issue, or looking mainly at overclocking sites; but the 1366 seems to be preferred over the 1156. Maybe the landed costs in SA make the price differences here a different proposition to other places.

EDIT: Another thing with the 1366 gives you a pathway to upgrade to the i9 without having to change your motherboard. And if you are thinking of xfire/sli, you will run at 16x/16x instead of 8x/8x.
