Looking at building a new pc for one of our offices ......I've been out of this for a while now and need some help.

Current Build

Core 2 Duo
E7300 - LGA 775
2GB RAM DDR2
250GB HDD Partitioned into
C:System(31GB - 29GB used)
D: Data (203GB - 111GB used)
Windows XP 32 bit - SP2
Gigabit port

This pc is used as a server for all other workstations in the office (i5 Laptops)
Accountant uses remote desktop for Pastel and Payroll
A few people log in from home to work on it as well
10MB ADSL line in all locations connecting to the pc

The problem is that the pc is very slow and using remote desktop for Pastel etc is becoming a tedious task.

How can I improve this and what would you guys recommend as a new build?

I was thinking:

i5
500GB HDD
128GB SSD - For the OS and Pastel
8GB RAM - DDR3
Windows 7 64 bit
Gigabit Lan
No monitor needed as everyone connects remotely or access files via the gigabit network

Suggestions?

Got about 10K to spend....

Thanks

Just put a ssd in the old computer, you will be suprised at the speed boost. I've been doing it for clients as an alternative to doing a full upgrade. With the price of software if you can't go opensource upgrading is a expensive business.

You can clone the 30 gig partition onto the ssd then resize to the full capacity using a gparted boot disc and use the old whole 250 as storage space. Post back here if you need a howto.

If you don't mind spending the 10k then +1 for the i5 rig your looking at. OCZ Vertex is a nice choice for a SSD.

Hi

Thanks for the advice, I want to do a full upgrade as the RAM amount is too low for current tasks and the current motherboard only supports DDR2 with 2 slots.
Also the machine is running XP 32Bit which support for has ended.

I'm looking to have this new rig last us about 6-8 years

I did a similar build last year for our office.

Opted for a good quality premium server case & power supply to keep everything running cool, stable & quiet

Another +1 for:
i5 & SSD Drive combo
Perhaps get the 250G instead of the 128 for future proof, if you need to run bigger apps at a later stage?

You can pick up refurbished xeon servers, think someone was giving one away here the other day.

A bit too late now to go the Xeon route - Made payment yesterday

silly silly

Ah well - This should be sufficient right?

If the old build is still running after 6-8 years then i'm sure this new one should last the same amount of time

Fingers crossed
