Another thread similar to many others here...But here goes :)

My PC is not going to last much longer. I have been due an upgrade for some time now and I would need to know what kind of price I would be looking at for what i am looking for...

That way I can start saving up, and hopefully I will be able to upgrade sometime this year still...Hopefully.

What I have now :

AMD XP2500+ running at 1.8GHZ
512MB DDR400 RAM
Chaintech Mobo
128MB PCI Graphics
Lots of harddrive space
CD writer
DVD Rom
Running Windows XP

Want to get a machine that will run Vista nicely, last me at least a year or two before becoming obsolete, be able to game decently on.

It needs to run quietly and cool. My room is like an oven and this AMD is not helping cool things down.

This is what I have been thinking so far:
Intel Dual Core Processor 1.6GHZ
1-2GB RAM
Decent Graphics (320MB perhaps)
Decent Mobo with at more USB slots ( mine only has four)and lots of RAM slots
200GB SATA HDD ( All mine are still IDE)
Nice Monitor ( Looking at the 19" ones that IC have on offer)
Some form of cooling for HDDs and for CPU

That's what I have so far. What you guys think? How much should I be looking at? Not going to able to put very much away each month towards it, so I am hoping not much....:p

Either way, will be good to know...

Thanks!

Henry

Well I like AMD but Intel is the better choice now
RAM get 2GB for Vista, 1GB minimum
Graphics card GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
Hard Drive 200GB won't last you that long depending on how you use it...I'd get a 320GB (if it's within your budget)
19" widescreen LCDs are tiny...if you're going wide get a 20" plus, price diff between a 19" wide and 20" wide are not that great..look for an LCD that has 8 bit colour, you won't be sorry
Sound you can get an XFi and pair it with a set of Logitech Z-5400 (Dell has them at R1800incl but you're gonna have to wait till May to get them)

Thanks for feedback so far....

Bear in mind I am trying to get the most I can on a limited budget! Which might not be that easy....

Sound is not an issue . Won't be needed anything more than I have now...And harddrives are also not in short supply here :)

What about cooling? Any suggestions there?

Make sure you get Geforce 8, as it supports DX 10 (only on Vista me thinks?)

I am assuming you are a PC gamer.

Well I don't dabble in cooling and overclocking so best wait for someone more experienced to answer that one...:)

EDIT. Why would he be asking for PC upgrade help if he was a console gamer??

I don't game at all as my machine wont run many games at all. Which is one reason why I want to upgrade so I can start...

DX 10. Yes, I have heard that that is important. Seems those cards start at like 3 grand though? :(

Keep you old card and wait for prices to drop.

Well the 7 series isnt priced so high and performs pretty well...graphics card and ram makes up the bulk of the system so you gotta give us your budget to give you better advice..
