Please can you guys comment on this quote for a new PC, received by a familiy member. It will be used for general office work, e-mail, internet, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio. No gaming, entertainment etc. Personally I think a bigger HDD would be better. Also Mecer - yes / no?

Prices exclude VAT.

Thanks

Meh..look for office stuff it really doesn't matter what you get, prices are fairly standard across the board esp if you're cherrypicking components. Mecer is fine, 500gb is fine (remember hard drives are one of the most easily upgradeable parts). It all looks ok to me.

If you are going to be using integrated graphics you should rather go with an AMD platform that has a better chipset and onboard graphics than any intel platform out there. You can also get a quad core AMD processor for about R1000 these days. Perhaps try getting a quote on a system with these.

:D

Edit

So what? The AMD system will render the text smoother in those applications? Oh i know, i'll buy a 5970 or a GTX295 so that it will allow me to display graphs in excel at resolutions of 2560x1600

The intel onboard solution is fine for office use

I wouldn't get a Mecer pc as i've heard that they sometimes lock the BIOS so you can't really upgrade the CPU later on (it's a mission if you have to do a BIOS flash to support the new cpu), i may be wrong about this though

Just looked at the price list, and it looks fine. My PC that gave up the other day was an 8 year old Mecer that ran 24/7.

That's too much to be spending on an office PC. The CPU is too fast whereas you can go on a budget CPU and get a graphics card with the cash you saved.

In Durbs you can get Q8200 system for R2999 + 999 for Windows 7 + R1700 for 23" Full HD Samsung 2350.

I suggest a build up PC. Just be specific with brands like Gigabyte for the motherboad, case and PSU, Western Digital or Samsung for the Hard Drive and Transcend for memory. And don't forget to install fans.

Get a cheap AMD build or cheap intel.

For example the Intel E3200 CPU is 2.4ghz dual core, 45nm, it's fantastic, and much cheaper than the E7500. So you can save a lot.

That should save around R500 ~ 600

Conroe Dual Core Celeron 2.4GHz 1M 800MHz [E3200]
Wolfdale Core 2 Duo 2.93GHz 3M 1066MHz [E7500]

Either way you are paying AMD. Intel settled a huge law suit with them so you might as well send your money straight to them :p

For office use you need more cores and that is where the quad core AthlonII comes in. The onboard graphics is so good it will even play 3D games and it has a couple of stream processors so it can do a little GPU folding too.

Wow dude that is crazy for a computer that simple things.

The reason why I like the E3200 is Intel have put in VT, which I like.

The E6300 @ 2.8ghz is also really cheap and has VT - great CPU.

Sure, but VT won't help for general office work, e-mail, internet, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio, etc.

I think it's expensive. I can buy a Core i7 920 system for less than that.

And no it's not from a distributor either. Brick & mortar shop.

You think that was expensive - for the same price as the i7 you can buy and even more powerful AMD and with the money that you save send your kids to university :p

Amd do not have anything more powerful than i7, they do not even have anything as powerful.

Shame for them i say, at least they are cheap.

Thanks guys for all the feedback, currently looking at everything

As a dealer I find that hard to believe as the cost of the MoBo and CPU is just under R5 000.
