Hi

I've just built my first pc which I'm using mainly for gaming.

I54690k
8gb 1866mhz ram
Zh87 mb
128gb ssd
1tn hdd

I'm using an old gpu, gtx 550 ti. Decided to hold off on a gpu till more cash comes in.

Wondering what kind of gpu is recommended for my set up and is my hardware powerful enough to run most new games on high gfx when I buy a new gpu.

Thought my set up with the 550 would be able to run games a bit better but not getting high for when upping the graphics on games like arma 3 n thief

Budget is as low as possible haha.

The set up, minus the gpu, should be able to handle most new age games quite well?

Guessing my budget is around 3k. Preferably less

Haha thanks man.

Any preference to which would be better for my set up or doesn't matter?

Depends on resolution you want to play on...if you're going higher than 1080p things get pricey. GTX960 will play current games on high settings at 1080p but will struggle as resolution gets higher (or IQ settings get higher).

GTX960 best new card you can get for around 3k

Have my pc set up to a 1080p tv. Doubt I'll be getting a higher res screen anytime soon

Then the GTX960 will be fine...assuming you are sitting TV distance away, some image quality settings won't be needed (anti-aliasing). Just run at 1080p vanilla and you'll be all good.

They will both be fine for you.

My personal preference is nvidia for 1. I use Linux, 2. better driver support accross all operating systems.

Thanks for the advice!

Another question.....

How far can I overclock my processor till I need extra cooling? It comes at 3.5ghz

I would go for the 280X over a GTX 960. The 280X is a rebadged and slightly faster HD7970, a card that I currently have. My brother has the predecessor of the 960, the 760, and my card beats it in almost all applications. The 760 is slightly better than the 960.

The rest of my setup is very similar to yours. i5-3570K, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD etc. It runs all games on max or nearly max at 1080p.

The R9 285 might also be an option. Only 2Gb RAM, but this should be fine at 1080p. Does support DX12, which is nice for Win10.

Test it and tell us. You may have gotten lucky and gotten a 4690k that runs at a lower voltage out the box (there is a range) in which case you have more headroom. No one can tell how your exact chip is going to overclock.
