Ok so I know there are a lot of these going around, but what the heck it dosn't hurt to start another.
So as some of you know my PC was stolen recently. The insurance has paid out R12k so I'm in for a fairly decent gaming set-up.

This is what I'm looking at at the moment(everything from landmark at the moment for sake of convenience when putting it together) recommendations for cheaper/better options welcome:

Asus p55d-e lx mobo: 1519
I5 760: 1820
WD caviar black sata 6g 1TB: 876
EVGA gtx 460 superclocked: 2251
Samsung 2030 20" wide: 1238
Mushkin silver line 2x2GB: 696
Samsung dvd writer: 169
Logitech x 5-30 5.1 speakers: 812
Windows Home premium 64bit: 949
Office home student 2010: 726

total: 11058

I'm still deciding on a case and power supply. I can also extend my budget by 1-2k if needs be (looks like I might have to)

current case options: Antec 300; coolermaster CM690
PSU options: Corsair gs600; Corsair hx650; Enermax liberty 620; OCZ modxstreme 700; Antec True power 650.

OK first question is are these cases long enough to fit a GTX 460 in, or a possibly longer card in the future?
Secondly would you recommend paying the extra money for the Enermax or Antec PSU they're 80+ bronze as opposed to just 80+ certified. I know PSU is technically the most important part of the PC specially when one does not want one's PC to die when PSU is killed by eskom or other such things, but all these PSUs are respectable brands and 80+ so I'm wondering if I should take the chance and save a little money.

Get the CM692 :) sexy case!! love mine! As long as the PSU is 80+ or better you'll be fine :) Maybe look at modular, it just makes your life so much easier!
Setup looks awesome..

Why not get a 23" or 24" Samsung monitor instead? You can never have too much screen real estate :D

  1. CPU & motherboard are cheaper at Prophecy, but you can get the i5 760 for much cheaper at www.pcint.co.za.
pcint also sells the Asus P7H55-M/USB motherboard for very cheap, but it doesn't have RAID or eSATA like the P7P55D-E LX.
  2. I chose a bigger and cheaper hard drive
  3. I went for the new Radeon HD 6870 instead
  4. CM 692 Plus case like nakedpeanut suggested
  5. 23" screen like Viva suggested
  6. If you know that you're not going to overclock, then DDR3 1333MHz RAM should suffice
  7. I selected CoolerMaster GX 650W PSU, which is perhaps a bit overkill, but it should last you very long + it comes with 5yr warranty.
With the CM 692 case, you can hide all the cables behind the motherboard plate and side panel, so I'm not that convinced that a modular PSU would be so much better.
  8. You can get the DSP/OEM versions of Windows for cheaper, and possibly the retail version too
  9. If you're still studying at the University, you can get the Microsoft Office for dirt cheap. I think my dad said you can get the MS Office Enterprise Edition 2010 for like $4

Now that I've shopped around for parts this could be on the cards. Or an SSD not sure yet

Decided on an Antec High current Game PSU I found at Rebeltech. I find Antec to make good PSUs and it's 80+ bronze certified.

Are Rebel Tech Legit by the way? Their prices are a bit better than prophecy and Landmark (both who I usually use)

Ah ninja'd by Pada. Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think I'm going to overclock at the moment. Maybe in the future. Also thanks for the tip for Office I am at university. Do I buy it through the university PC store? or how do I go about it?

Like I said before in the other thread I had. I'm not a fan of Coolermaster PSUs after my last one died after 3 months.

I also got the CM 692 case... the basic version though as I can't see the difference between it and the plus and advanced versions and it's cheaper.

would you say the 6870 is worth the extra dough over an overclocked 460? it's generally around 500 more expensive at most places and the EVGA card comes with a 10 year warranty which I'm a fan of.
