New PC

Well dude, I pick my PSU like I would pick my GPU or CPU.

A lot of us look for the best CPU and the best GPU but often neglect the PSU (which also can be fun to research and purchase).

I read a lot of reviews at jonnyguru.com which helped me understand just how PSU's work and why it's important to pick the right one. ;)

Right now i'm looking at the Seasonic Platinum line of PSU's.

Corsair GS600

EDIT: thanks a lot for your help!

The GS600 is 'okay'. I seem to remember it's 800w brother not being able to supply it's rated power, not sure if it's the same with the 600w.

Might I suggest this instead (it's a bit over your budget by R200): Coolermaster Silent Power Pro Gold 600w - Modular Power Supply

Gold rated. Modular. 5 Years Warranty.

Seems like good bang for the buck. I'm not so experienced with CM though, maybe someone else can comment on their experience with this one?

Review seems good: Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 600W Power Supply Review

Although, at this price point you could also go for:

TX750M (Modular)
TX750V2

Otherwise if it's too much, the Corsair GS 600 seems like the more suitable option. Just understand there's a reason why the GS series is cheaper. The components inside are not as good as the TX series.

HTH

The GS700 is a good buy at that price. +1 For the GS700.

I was VERY disappointed in the AX850 I bought, was R400 more than the Antec HCP 850, and the cables is too short if you want to do a bit of cable management(Coolermaster Trooper), O and because it was too short I didn't have enough connections for everything. Only have 4 HDD's, DVD drive and Fan controller. Even the older HX850 would have been a better buy, same warranty, longer cables and could have easily lived with the silver classification, fully modular is useless you will always need a 24pin and 4/8pin Power.

Any modular PSU under 850Watts is useless period!!
If you really want a modular PSU get the HCP 850 or HX850, NOT the AX850.

Will not recommend the TXm's(more money for something you will not really use), just get a normal non modular TX v2.0 if you intend on getting one of these.

I think I paid R30 more for the TX750m compared to the TX750v2. Was happy to pay that and leave half the cables in the box.

Good morning everyone,

So i decided on the following:

ANTEC CASE - NINE HUNDRED TWO - R1024
Asus P8Z68-VPRO/GEN3 - R2221
INTEL CORE I5 2500K-3.30GHZ-SO - R1879
Corsair GS700 Gaming Series 700w Power Supply - R935
Corsair CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9 / CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B , Vengeance with heatsink , 4Gb - s - R283

Total:R6342

Any other thoughts before i place an order?
Are the prices reasonable?

Can i ask why did you sell it?
i am still trying to figure out what i can't do with this PSU and can with the Corsair 800
This is why:
Can't go wrong with the Corsair AX (Gold) series. I assume you're talking of the 850w?

It's a solid PSU with good warranty (7 Years). It's based on the Seasonic X platform which is pretty damn good!
I bought the SeaSonic X-750w, very sexy PSU.

Look I don't disagree with Polygon, all his point are correct. And I too would rather pay more for a PSU I know will last and supply exactly the power I expect...
But for many people they just get what ever PSU is in their budget and most of the time they never have any problems..

There's a lot to be said in choosing a power supply.

Many don't understand that it's sort of the 'heart' of your system in that it feeds every component with power. Make the wrong choice and bad things could happen.

I'm not sure how much you know about computers (PSU's in particular) but let me aware you of the main points:

a) You need a power supply that is 80+. Silver is good, Gold is better and Platinum is the best (but expensive!). By doing this you save electricity (may not be astronomical amounts but it helps).
b) You need good voltage regulation. The voltages have to sit within specification and fluctuate as little as possible.
c) You need good components in the PSU. Japanese capacitors last much longer than cheaper ones.
d) You need it to produce as little heat as possible.
e) You need the right wattage for the system you're running.
f) Warranty is always good. Aim for >= 5 Years.
g) Modular does help.

I recommend you go to jonnyguru.com and check out some PSU's.

I would not choose anything RaidMAX, Corsair GS or Coolermaster GX due to them failing in one or more of the above points.

Antec seem good. Corsair's TX, HX and AX range is good. Stay away from Coolermaster "Extreme" power supplies.

Remember when your PSU goes it can (and probably will) kill some/all of your components. Do you really want to save a few hundred rand and get a lousy PSU? Especially when you're putting good (and expensive) components in there?

Didn't think so. Pick a good PSU and it'll last you a couple of years. ;)

Whats wrong with the cm gx series ?
I have a GX 650.

I am also trying to figure out how much to spend on a PSU, considering all the variables involved. I remember seeing a wattage calculator somewhere once, but it listed old components. Does anyone know of something like that that's recent?

1) Get a P67 or P68 instead.
2) It's totally up to you, it doesn't matter in the end, it does however matter if it's a decent brand or not. Stay away from Axtrom, try go for Corsair, G.Skill, Kingston, Adata, ect
3) NEVER cheap out on the PSU, get a decent brand PSU that will be enough for your Pc, good brands are Corsair, Antec, bad brands are Huntkey, Proline.
