I'm comparing two phones. Generally, would you take the one with more RAM or the better CPU?

Qualcom CPU = ROM future.
If not - then chances of XDA Custom ROM development usually goes out the window and with it long term security updates. Even the big name phone brands only promises about "2 years" of updates for their phones.

Question is, how long do you think Elephone will?

The specs are awesome - but keep the above in mind.

PS. CPU and that 2k display forsure. 4Gb is ample.

I'm leaning towards the S8.

My Xiaomi Note 3 (3GB RAM) closes apps too often for my liking despite being set not to. Not sure 1GB more is enough.

Re support, if Elephone support this for 2 years I'll be happy. At this price, I can replace it then and still flog it for something decent on Gumtree or these forums.

Let's see what is most appealing come next Friday :D

Using the same phone and don't have the closing issue at all. Can recommend flashing Resurrection Remix 7.1.2 for now - and wait for the RR Oreo to arrive, or NOS Oreo if you feel more adventurous.

If you don't need all the bells and whistles then LineageOS or Paranoid Android is fine.

I'll take the P8. Mediatek don't focus on the high end Helio X... range anymore and they're more power hungry.

Classic Miui problem and why I hate it. Apps you care about you'll need to lock or you can try turning off Miui optimizations under the developer menu.

I'd take the P8. More RAM is always better in the long term.

6GB RAM means a lot more apps can stay in memory and launch faster when you go back to them, and it means the phone should handle heavy usage without a hitch.

If a phone needs 6GB of RAM to operate optimally, then there's something wrong with that phone. 4GB is more than enough.

It's not about running optimally, most modern smartphones are well optimized, it's about future proofing.

It's great to say 4GB RAM is good now, in the same vain we said 2GB RAM was more than enough a few years ago.

I'd always rather have the phone with more RAM, especially with apps in general getting bigger, even in iOS apps are taking up more RAM, so that they are available to launch faster.

The thing with a phone, though, is that people hardly keep them for longer than 2-3 years -where as PC hardware is used for longer periods.
He would probably be getting a new phone before the RAM becomes an "issue" :)

That may be true, but why settle for less now when u out can have a great experience? More RAM opens more possibilities for AR, VR, Camera and other apps. 2-3years is actually a long time in Mobile, a very long time. 2 years ago Fast Charging was something still in its infancy and Wireless Charging took forever to charge and it wasn't at the level it is at now, 2 years ago people were not consuming as much media as they are now, 2 years ago AI tech still looked like a long way away in Mobile.

Anyway its up to the OP. But I always suggest going for more RAM, that phone will make a great backup down the road and go a lot further for the money.

I hear you...but I don't think the OP is going to VR -of course, I may be wrong, but I have a feeling he won't.
A little extra RAM won't affect wireless charging and stuff like that :D
So he needs to close a few extra apps with "only" 4GBs, but at least he'll have a faster processor to run the apps a little better.

So...more open apps with "jankiness"?
Or..."just enough" RAM and better CPU performance / processing?
:p

Side Note: Are there any apps that use 4GB of RAM? (If there aren't any, I'm sure he'll be fine.)
