Contract is almost up, so it'll be time for an upgrade, and I'm thinking... none of the cursed contracts in SA are any good

To get any sort of half decent phone it seems you're in for R250+, and then you're stuck with too little data. Except CellC but the only phone I'd get is the S3 and R330 p/m is too much for this cheapskate :p I'd like to get away under R200 p/m. So, it it possible, any suggestions?

Or should I get prepaid/contract of some kind with just some voice/sms + data, and then buy a phone (I'm in the US so maybe I can get one cheap)

For how long will you be in the US? See if you can't buy a Nexus 4 cheaply and go prepaid.

When I paid off my contract, I went prepaid....ended up spending a lot more that what the free minutes and data were that I got on the contract.

I would buy an iPhone, sell it here, then use that money perhaps, towards your S3 contract? I'm not like the others here though that knows if the US version of the phone will work in SA.

You can sell the phone for +\- R8000 for the 16Gb version, and your contract is R330+\-Pm, that would be R8190 for the base cost. $649 x R8.5 = +/-R5516 spent on the iPhone 5 16Gb from the iStore in the states.

Oh, and don't buy more WC parts :P You have made SA cudders jealous enough!!!!!

+1 for the Nexus 4 + Cell C
(You can get a Straightup 100 topup month to month, 100 minutes,MB's,SMS. Then buy more airtime to convert to data to qualify for the 15c/mb out of bundle)

About the Nexus 4. I dont know when supplies will stabilise, but if you can get the 16GB, then go for it. I would have gotten one from guys on the forum, but then I found a 32GB Galaxy S3 on gumtree for R4500.

I'm not worried about that, I'm very good with staying under my limits

Design for my next case is 80% complete, I'm pondering if I should put some renders up in the meantime  And besides, if I make a new case, then some lucky bugger will get to buy my old one...

What is your current phone?

LG Optimus One  It was ok two years ago, but I had to overclock it just to make myself be able to live with it until now. 800mhz (max OC) is on the limits of acceptable, and its got zero internal storage, etc etc. So I want at least 1ghz dual core, and 4GB internal storage. Everything else is a bonus

But sounds like Nexus + CellC is winning. I'd probably go for the straight up 50 with extra data.

Looked at the Nexus a bit more... nobody thinks 16GB is too little storage? I see there is no SD slot

Also, I'll probably flash a different ROM onto my phone, so if there are any other recommendations, keep in mind I would like "official" support. I'm currently running Cyanogenmod, so I'll probably stick with it. Unless someone has another good alternative?

Is battery a concern?

Battery is not too much of a concern, I am by a charger of some kind more than enough

I ran the numbers, S3 is only R500 more expensive... But I dont think I need that much juice... or maybe I do if I want it to last 2 years? Dont want to make the same mistake as I did with my current phone!

Same boat - upgrade due but don't want to spend a lot - in fact, would be happy with a good second hand S2 if I could find out what at a reasonable price

Iv been a ios user since the 3g iphone.
Got the 3gs, the 4, the 4s and imported a 5 in late nov.

Recently sold my 5 and im now back on the 4s.

The 5 is cool, its thiner, lighter faster blah blah... But its still just a iphone.

Im looking to get a nexus 4 ( if i can just find 1)

Other phone that looks ok ish is the lumina 920

 if that is case just take the S3. The N4 should be a lot cheaper, they went for $349 (16GB) on the play store in the US. Sold out and everyone is waiting for more stock.
