I got Guild Wars when it came out, it's still in the case with the plastic on, would there be any use in me starting to play it now?

Yeah its not a game where you need to grind for hours at end to be able to be any good.

Within 1 month you could be doing all the hardest missions and all the elite areas.

How big do you think the updates would be before I can play, and would it maybe work with local bandwidth?

Think with all the laoding it might be around 1.5-2 gig.... No idea really :(

If you know someone with the client then you can just copy theirs.

I am sure if you ask nicely then someone on the forum will help you.

Where do live in SA?

mmmm might have to ask someone to post it to you.

Ps No local cap won't work for it. But you might be able to get the client as a torrent for local download. Google it a bit ;)

The client (gw.exe) and the game data file (gw.dat) are 2 different things. You need both to be updated to the latest.
The latest up-to-date gw.dat file is typically around 3.8GB. This is mine, I have all campaigns and EotN. I have been everywhere in GW.

What campaigns do you have Soul Assassin? The answer will determine on the amount of updates you will get and also when you purchased the game, since the game on the discs may have been cut with a specific build date / version on them.

I would say that your updates won't be over 1GB. I am willing to bet it will be between 500MB-750MB.
The reason I am saying this is because GW has an excellent compression and distribution method they use to stream the game updates. Once the compressed data is downloaded, it will be decompressed once you enter the game / campaign and travel from outpost to outpost and the data in the .dat is required.

I have done full syncs from scratch, with no CD's and then the most I downloaded was 1-1.2GB of updates, this is 10's of 1000's of files.

It's never too late to start playing. The game plays grind-free in the early levels, and once you hit max level @ lvl20, you can enjoy the game completely. This max leveling process takes at most a week if you play 2-3 hours per day, when playing normally and just following the storyline.

If you have a problem with updating the game, I might be able to put my gw.dat file (3.9GB) online for you to download. Let me know what you decide to do.

I only have the original Guild Wars Prophecies. If I install the game from the disc's wouldn't it tell me how big the update would be?

No, it won't tell you how big it is in size (KB/MB). It will give you a file count, which you cannot use to gauge the total size. That file estimate is only to launch the game.
Once you have done that download, the game will launch and it will continue to stream the game updates to you in the background. I wait for this to finish, since it may impact on your playing experience.

You can also force a full download by inserting a <-image> switch after the gw.exe when you launch it. This will give you a complete file count of how many files will be downloaded. It still doesn't give you the size though.

If you have Prophecies only, you must have bought it quite a while ago?
It is the slowest campaign of all, but it is the classic beginning to the whole Guild Wars story and a must-play. There shouldn't be a lot of updates if you only have this campaign.
The other campaigns add quite a bit more to the whole Saga.
