So if I recall correctly all this power stuff started (at least the power cuts) about 2008 and they was talk that Eskom needed new power stations and they would take 6 years or so to build.

Well its now 6 years later and have any new power stations come online? Have they even started building any yet?

Yes, there are three new power stations: Medupi, Kusile and Ingula. And all three are years behind schedule. Blame who you wish but it seems to be the usual suspects (ANC, BEE etc.)

Medupi is not far off from turning on stage 1 from what I hear. Probably within the next 12 months or so.

Wish there were more Renewable Energy Projects. read a study that says renewable energy can provide base load for america, with careful planning.

are you outside of SA?

That sounds unlikely.

Well, here is some hope even if speculative.

Mark Diesendorf – Associate Professor and Deputy Director, Institute of Environmental Studies, UNSW at the University of New South Wales.

Dr. Mark Jacobson – the head of Stanford University’s Atmosphere and Energy Program.

Not sure Ingula counts as a power station.

In the context of this thread its a power station. All power stations convert one form of energy to another form. Right?

Can't we just use batteries when we need moar power and charge them at nite?

Then we pop a black label with the money saved building new power stations. Problem solved.

Yes. But at a price.

We need both storage *and* generation.

Storage will start becoming ever more important, as not all of our generation is 24/7 - solar, and wind are time dependant although solar production is highly predictable, hence easier to integrate.

We should be building more hydro generation / storage right now, as projects take years to build.

Medupi and Kusile are both coal spewing environmental nightmares waiting to happen.
Eskom was lent money by the world bank with the mandate that they install coal scrubbers to remove sulphur dioxides - they're now arguing that they're way over budget, and way over schedule, and don't want to spend the extra to install.

IPP's are however ready to take up the slack, we just need to let them bid on providing power. Eskom is extremely recalcitrant to do so. Every time the meagre allowances they give out are oversubscribed by 4-500%. Its time that NERSA actually did something and opened up IPP so that we don't have to wait another 10 years or more for our electricity generation to reach that of the late 90's. We've actually got less working capacity now than 20 years ago. Our economy is growing ever smaller due to this and the ANC's other wonderful interventions in ruining our once world class infrastructure.

Nuclear is the future, along with hydroelectric where feasible. Dicking around with panels and propellers is such a waste of time, money, and effort. Step back a little and start looking in planetary and evolutionary terms, and it becomes quite obvious.

Exactly. We need to start making more stuff for local and export. That will drive development. Not virtual money that puts us more in debt.
