recently got a new sim card, immediately after registration i got an sms saying i had won r195 000 from a rica competition, this was almost believable since my number was new. But having got these messages before i knew otherwise,

how did they get my number, this is a new number, are the thugs working in cohorts with mobile operators

i agree with you. Each time I rica I get spam immediately afterwards. Someone there is either selling the numbers or are directly involved. It even happened with a brand new 8ta range number i registered a month ago.

Numbers get recycled, or the scammers just send to thousands of random numbers. No conspiracy.

Yes they do. My Afrihost SIM received a dozen or so spam messages within a week of use.

Only an idiot would fall for such an obvious scam.

Not really. Those Rica scams are too convenient. Think about it, you Rica a SIM, few minutes later you receive an SMS that states you have won in a Rica promotion. Some people need money and are desperate, which gives them the less time to think, so they just act quickly due to desperation.

Same thing happened to me! I honestly dont know what to believe, but I think it's an inside job. Maybe the Rica agents give the "to be RICAd" SIMs to the scammers, so as soon as the SIM gets RICAd, the SMS goes through.

I came across this thread on my here on the forums: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/558293-SMS-Spam-Post-yours-here
People showing screen shots of these annoying SMSs. I was inspired to write an article on how to annoy the douch bags back! It's here: http://sacellularnet.co.za/2013/12/3-nifty-methods-annoy-sms-scammers/

This RICA law has failed dismally!!!!!!
