I got the router on Tuesday and really happy with it. Just tested the WAP2 and my laptop can also not connect to it.

If you are paranoid with connections then rather whitelist the MAC address, still the safest way.

But I do not have a problem with the LEDs as your experiencing.

I did not that this router allows multiple accounts, have you tried it yet?

i already use mac adressing < still paranoid
donno abt multi accounts
led i mean if 1 is on then 2 is partialy lit from the light from 1 so it looks like its also active

According to this site, you can load two (or more DSL accounts) onto the router. Then by updating the IPTABLES (routing rules), you can use a local & international accounts similtaneously. Going to give it a try. And if you know your LINUX, you can easily extend this to use seperate accounts for different users :)

I also saw the LED issue, my router sits in a well lit area and it was only after I switched off the lights in the room that I saw the bleeding you where refering to. Not an issue for me but I do understand why your not happy.

Overall I'm very happy with this router, but the WPA2 is a bummer. In defence of the router, I do know that under LINUX (I used my netbook to test) WPA2 is not well supported with certain hardware. Have not done a firmware upgrade on the router to see if that solves it.

Hey all.

I've got at the moment a vrey old Marconi router that really doesn't suit my needs.
Can anyone recommend a good router with the following properties.

Price must be reasonable (1.5k max).
4/5 (5 hopefully) ports with gbps ethernet.
802.11n spec (certified and not provisional) with a good footprint that doesn't drop off by the meter exponentially.
Dyndns forwarding.
Mac filtering.
DHCP (guess thats usually standard).

Been searching around and havent really found anything that will do the above within my budget.
Care to help?

@nukefission:
I would never go for any of the Telkom routers since they are too expensive and don't have all the necessary (security) features.
I usually recommend D-Link, Linksys, Billion and MikroTik.

@armitage:
Here's a TP-Link W8960N 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Router for R599 (excl VAT). It doesn't have gigabit LAN though.

Alternatively, you can get the following non ADSL router: TP-LINK WR1043ND 300Mbps Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router for R599 (excl VAT), and hook it up with your existing Marconi router. This router also includes a USB port that can be used for portable network storage.

Dude...I'll hack MAC based security in 10sec. Best always will be MAC + WPA2 but even just WPA2 should be enough for most people.

Linux has this wonderful little switch in it's ifconfig command. Read up on it a little :P

If you're really paranoid, you could hide the SSID, enable MAC filtering and use WPA2 security to simply connect to the AP, and then on top of that you could host a VPN server to give you Internet access :D

I think these Telkom routers shouldn't be named routers, but modems instead and simply be placed in bridge mode! These routers are also known to give problems with their firewall that just terminate TCP connections unexpectedly as well.

hide ssid flips up my wireless
oh and by light problem i mean that the light of led 1 partially shines onto led 2
easy way
paintball comes from gun 1 is blue
paintball from gun 2 is red
they both shoot straight ahead
1 first then 2
red color will overlap the blue slightly
for most people who dont understand what i mean

oh and i dont have local cap thx to afrihost :p
