New shocks

erm, if you read my post correctly, i said 99.9%
also you fail to understand that rally suspension has f-all to do with every day road cars and so does 'lowered with bilsteins'.

Also to the OP, there is absolutely no reason for you to fit suspension like Bilstein/Koni/Tein/H&R/Eibach to a 'normal' vehicle.

Rally suspension has everything to do with normal road suspension...how do you think "normal" shocks are developed in the first place?

The OP had a problem with shocks in 60 000 km, so there is quite possibly some factor that will make him hard on shocks, and, as such, Bilstein with a life time guarantee, might be the way to go.

There is no need to get all sarcastic in a topic where you obviously haven't a clue what you are talking about.

Most of my travelling is done on pretty rough stuff and the ONLY shocks that last are Bilsteins, WTF is wrong with suggesting them as a possible alternative?

You are definately wrong. Dolby sure doesnt want to fit Coilovers or even high performance sports shocks, he just wants the standard shocks which cost around R2k. The last time i fitted Bilsteins on my VR6 it costed me R1800for the sports shocks.

OP: Also dont be fooled when they tell you it can be serviced, cos it will only last a month or two and they end up giving you trouble. Not worth the hassle imo.

If you dont mind me asking, on which car will you be fitting FSD's ?

K4 Astra Coupe Turbo

Kayaba (KY) would be my first choice. Monroe Sensa-Trac is also very nice.

Thanks for the replies ... just one or two other questions :

Why would they go at 60,000km? Abuse?
What do they effect being broken - handling and ride?

A broken shock does several things apart from messing with a normally smooth ride. You have mentioned handling...well that simply disappears, then try braking...it will extend your stopping time by miles, as the wheel has no grip on the road, so the car you would have missed when slamming on your brakes, now becomes a rear ended mess. Tyres are also adversely affected, as worn shocks make them bounce on the road, and wear patterns like scallops appear on the tread...i.e. a series of flat spots which actually destroy the tyre.

Just as a bit extra, if we all drrove cars with gas shocks we wouldn't have "washboard" ruts to worry about on dirt roads..the ridges are formed when normal oil shocks heat up and bounce excessively...:D

As I said above, either the car was abused heavily, that will also mean the springs will need to be replaced soon and probably the steering rack will need to replaced soon also, that is if it was abused that is.

A "broken" shock leaks oil, so the shock is going to be very "springy" for lack of a better word, car won't break as well as it used to and if you go over a large enough bump in the road the shock will bottom out and you'll hear a loud knocking sound.

Shocks could also have gone because you fitted mags or bigger brakes, calipers, etc. that increases the unsprung weight and the shocks and springs don't last as long as they usually do, they lighter the weight the longer the shock lasts.

Not sure about the Astra G but my Corsa's Shocks only needed to be replaced @ 150 000 km (around 8 years old).

Shocks can go as early as 60k. Apparently we dont notice it because we tend to adjust our driving style for the slow degradation of the shocks.

Had the Gabriel Gasriders fitted to the wife's car not too long ago for under R2k. Car rides like new.

As for Bilsteins, last time I checked they were damn expensive and not worth putting on a car if you aint gonna do some tracktime or street race, especially the coilovers.

Sent my car for a service today... back shocks are almost worn and they want to replace them @ R5k

That's R2500 for a shock.

No thank you!

was that OEM or aftermarket? Sounds a bit pricey but all parts have gone up if not doubled over the past 3 or 4 years:eek:

sounds more like oem... and what car is it for?

This is when I get p[issed off! How can these idiots say that your shocks are "almost worn"?????????????!

That's like saying that you are "almost" sick or "almost" hungry! You either are or you aren't!

That price is crazy, and typical of the sort of price that would be quoted by a dealer! If you really want them replaced, shop around...no way in Hell are rear shocks worth 5k, unless they are from an Aston Martin or some such exotic!

We're looking at around 100 000km since they were last replaced so they up for a change.

I asked the dealer how it could possibly be that price.. they had no answer.

The HiQ down the road from my house will be getting a visit from me on Saturday morning.

I got two shocks (Gabriels, I think) for my front now - wow ... feels great!

R1,250.00 for *both* - labour, wheel alignment and everything included ...

Supa Kwik in Paulshof.

I thought all Supa Kwiks would be the same, but another quoted me R1700.00. Speak to a guy called Lee.

I bought two second hand Monroes (20000km on them), with brand new coil springs for R600. They were awesome, until my car was stolen the next day :)

Go do a shock test somewhere else. Our Polo the VW place said we needed new shocks but they were absolutely fine.

My Ford Focus's one rear shock is leaking a bit of oil. It passes the bounce test, but the car sways slightly when I hit a bad manhole or pothole on the road. Something obviously aint right.

I also feel a little vibration feeling coming from the rear when I drive at about 100km's/h on the highway. Its not the wheels or tyres, just had them replaced a week ago and the problem was there before and now after.

Ford Dealership says everything is fine after a visual check, Autoquip says they need replacing. I hate inconsistancy.

Taking the car back to Ford to help them visually, and hopefully they will oblige (maintenance plan)

something else I want to add...

dont you find it funny how a dealership will find nothing wrong with your car when its under warranty or has a maintenance plan. but as soon as that plan is over, you get a long list of things that need fixing/replacing.
