New Smart fortwo & forfour

Smart returns to city car roots with sub-£20k two-seat #2

New city car matches original's EQ Fortwo's dimensions, but offers twice the range

Smart will return to its roots with the arrival of the new #2 city car, which channels the spirit of the original two-seater and will hit the UK next year priced from less than £20,000.

Unveiled in production form at the Paris motor show, 28 years after the first-generation Fortwo was launched at the same event, the new city runaround sits on a bespoke new platform and returns the reinvented Smart brand to its urban origins.

Smart is a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, with the cars styled in Germany but built in China on Geely platforms. It has expanded into offering a wider range of models, including large SUVs. But the firm has long vowed it wouldn’t abandon its city car roots.

The #2 is just 2746mm long, actually making it slightly shorter than the third-generation Fortwo that went out of production in 2024. The styling clearly draws inspiration from the original, and it has a turning circle of just 6.95 metres, matching that of its predecessor.

The #2 is powered by a rear-mounted 80bhp electric motor, which drives the rear wheels. Powered by a 35.8kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, it has an official WLTP range of 180 miles, and can be charged at speeds of up to 65kW. It also offers a vehicle-to-load outlet.

Smart #2 debuts as a city-friendly two-seater EV with 290 km range

The Smart ForTwo finally gets a proper EV remake, underpinned by a brand-new platform developed specifically for it. Say hello to the Smart #2, built on the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). The Mercedes-backed company showcased the new model during the 2026 Paris Motor Show and announced trims and prices, even.

Spec-wise, the vehicle is quite impressive, aiming to reinvent the city-friendly two-seater category. It has one rear-mounted electric motor producing 80 hp and 130 Nm of torque, which is enough for the Smart to reach 100 km/h in 11.6 seconds. The top speed is capped at 140 km/h, which is more than enough for intra-city commutes.

The Smart #2 carries a 35.8 kWh LFP battery delivering up to 290 km of range, per WLTP, while the DC fast charging peaks at 65 kW. That may not sound like a lot, but it enables the battery to go from 10 to 80% in 20 minutes, which is great. AC charging takes just over 3 hours if you add the 11 kW AC charging option. However, the entry-level trims support up to 7.4 kW charging so it will be slower.

The car also supports vehicle-to-load functionality, letting it power external devices.

Dimensions-wise, the new Smart isn't much different from its predecessor. It's an extremely tiny car, measuring 2,746 mm in length, but still offers 305 liters of trunk space, which is expandable to 527 liters with the right seat folded. Not too shabby for a tiny Smart. Oh, and it retains the split tailgate design, so you can fit bigger stuff if you need to.

The Smart isn't heavy on the screen, as it has a small-by-current-standards 10.1-inch central infotainment display and an 8.8-inch driver display for the instrument cluster.
