Smart is returning to its roots with this funky Concept #2

And yes, a production version will happen. The teeny two-seater is set to return later this year

Alert your pals that can’t park, because the tiny little two-seater Smart car is coming back, and this… isn’t quite it.

What you’re looking at above is actually the Smart Concept #2, but it gives us a glimpse at what the real life #2 will look like when it’s eventually shown off at the Paris Motor Show in October. And yes, like with all other new Smarts, you do have to call it the ‘Hashtag Two’. Lame.

Anyway, this concept strangely reminds us of the one-off Aston Martin Cygnet V8 with its bulging bodywork and arches. Although obviously, unlike that former Toyota iQ, the new Smart is all-electric.

There’s no word on how big the battery could be, but Smart actually reckons the Concept #2 could have 186 miles of range and DC fast charging that would handle a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in less than 20 minutes. Bit of an improvement on the final EQ ForTwo’s 90 miles of range.

The world of electric cars is full of large SUVs and heavy crossovers. However, the brand that once owned the "tiny car" crown is finally coming back to the city. Smart showed off its newest creation, the Concept #2. This little EV is a peek at the future of the famous two-seater city car - it still looks like a Smart, but it has changed quite a bit. It grew taller and longer, and we can point the finger at Mercedes-Benz for the growth spurt.

Smart used to be famous for making cars so small you could park them sideways. After the old Fortwo stopped production in 2024, many wondered if the brand would only make big SUVs now. The Concept #2 proves that Smart still cares about tight city streets. The new model was designed by the team at Mercedes-Benz, but it uses technology from Geely - it is a mix of German style and Chinese hardware.

When you look at the Concept #2, you see a familiar shape. It has two doors, almost no hood, and wheels pushed all the way to the corners. But if it looks a little bigger than you remember, that's because it is. The car measures 2,792 mm long, making it almost 30 cm longer than the very first Smart car. It is also 97 mm longer than the last electric Smart EQ ForTwo we saw.

Back in April, Smart revealed that it would be going back to its roots, working on an EV that would be the spiritual successor to the original Smart ForTwo city car. Then, the company presented the Concept #2 a few weeks later in order to give us a better idea of what the production car would be based on.

Today Smart has announced that the upcoming #2 EV is undergoing extensive global testing ahead of its world premiere, which will take place at the Paris Motor Show in October.

The testing is meant to ensure that "the reinvented two-seater city car delivers unmatched urban agility, driving stability, and uncompromising safety". The car's agility was tested "against a wide range of real-world urban challenges", which included unexpected obstacles, emergency lane changes, and low-grip surfaces.
