Smart is back! No really, it's about to make a teeny electric city car again

Smart is set to return to its roots with the #2, a dinky new urban two-seater

Big news of a very small car: Smart has announced that it is developing a new all-electric, two-seater city car called the #2, and it’s scheduled for launch in late 2026.

Though details are thin on the ground other than the name and these… shadows of what we presume are the new car, we know that it’ll be an evolution of the original Smart Fortwo, which burst onto the scene in 1998 with plans to completely revolutionise city mobility.

Of course, that didn’t quite happen. Still, the Fortwo was pretty cool. Smart trialled an all-electric version in 2007, which later went into full production in 2011, but it was… pretty rubbish. Well, useful around town, but even later generations were held back by their 85-mile-ish range.

So we’re hoping for better things here. Now a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, it joins the #1 crossover, #3 coupe/crossover thing, and bigger #5 SUV. And battery technology has come a long way since then.
