Unless Dr Ivy awards an interim license to a local operator (Nexus, Transtel / Eskom)....
Unlikely though...
Probaly going to be a while before we see any meaningfull change - yet again.
What gets my goat is that this should have been dealt with last year already! Now Telkom has an open playing field which is going to make it more and more difficult (and less attarctive) for competition to enter the market.
Why is it that Telkoms monopoly ran out in 2002(Hope that is right) and they are still allowing them to use their monopoly rights, to disallow others from providing much needed telecoms? Shouldnt all the previous monopoly rights have ended in 2002 too?

<br />Chubs - in a nutshell the answer is - the Minister of Communication - Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri.
something to think about.... Telkom or the goverment will never allow compitiion in this county!, telkom has 49% shares in the second SNO. So it does not matter who get it (transtel escom...) they will still have the monopoly!!!!!!!!!!!.
If only we can get a interational operator in this country... but i believe it is not about technology or service providing, is all about the money and who will drive new cars......Makes you think[]
I think this is all because all people in government are probably lining their pockets to keep the sno away. This government is corrupt, always has been. It seems we cannot do it ourselves i think we need outside help to get our government in order. as for Telkom i don't think that there is any bigger pathetic excuse for a telecommunications company in the universe !!!!
But thats just my oppinion, everybody can think what they want
oblix it does not matter if the government has a share in the new sno. The idea is that the network operater (the guys who have been bidding) have a 51% share so that they are in effect a private company.
I agree with Pantera(awesome group) that this governments corruption/stupidity is to blame. The top fat cats at telkom got about 60 million rand combined last year (excluding bribes, theft and general rape) for their pathetic performance.

[:0] How do they [Telkom] have a 49% stake in the SNO?
God Bless & Kind Regards,
Richard

Dr Ivy should leave office now. Not tomorrow. Immediately. She has left a trail of screwups in her wake during her term in office...
She is DIRECTLY responsible for Communications in SA. It can't be clearer as where the "buck" should stop or who should be held accountable.
Undoubtably though she will exit under a shower of accolades from her peers, slapped on the back for a job well done, and go on to screw up something else.
Mabey she should swop with the Minister of Health... (I hope I never get sick though)
