Hi guys, so i've decided to get myself adsl for use at home. Currently running on an LTE router and enjoying the great speeds but i now need a bit more volume.

So i went to a Telkom store and the guy told me the only way i can get the installation fee waived is to sign a 24/36 month contract. I wanted to grab the 4meg Telkom simple deal (or any other bundled deal which includes voice&adsl line rentals & waived installation) on month to month keeping all line rentals with Telkom.

So is it really the case that the free installation is only available on 24 month contracts? I already have an adsl router so don't really need another one.

Is there any other better/ cheaper way to get onto the adsl bandwagon?

Thanks

The cheapest way is to order the voice part only. I stand to be corrected but I think all the calling plans weekender, weekender and evening plan and the unlimited anytime plan comes with free installation.

If that get's installed you can then place the order for the adsl part. It might be the cheapest but not the fastest way.

The fastest way would be getting one of the simple deals. They are not contract based and installation is free if you have a good credit record. If you don't then you need to pay a deposit.

I called 10210 pressed the option for new service. Said I want the simple package for R499 and they told me yes the system indicates I qualify for free installation and that was it. Got the internet account details immediately and a sms with a appointment for the installation.

The contracts also come with free installation.

So I suggest you call 10210 free from any landline or free from Telkom Mobile and Cellc then just do it that way. They tell you over the phone before they start with the application if they can do a credit check and tell you right there yes its all good free installation.

Hi,

When i got my line in August, the landline / adsl installation was all free AND i got a free modem with no contract. Maybe this is no longer available?

Ok thanks guys will insist on the Telkom simple deal just cross checked all indicators say installation is free even on month to month. Maybe @Telkomza could confirm as well

Just to confirm i went and applied for the Telkom simple plus for R499 and the installation and all the freebies are available on month to month. Waiting for installation on Monday :) . Hoping that smile lasts once i'm on the Adsl wagon

Yup Kianm, it will. You should have been warned by Telkom that they bill a month in advance, but you're only going to receive your first bill a month AFTER you start utilising the service (they have a very slow billing process). Bottom line, just be prepared for a double-cost for your first payment.

I think your happiness with ADSL will depend a lot on the quality of the LTE/3G network you were utilising beforehand. In my case, in my new apartment there was just zero signal. If I wanted to get a whiff of 3G, I needed to struggle each time with positioning the modem to get at least a tiny bit of signal, and even that would get interrupted regularly.

Coming from LTE, you're going to be sorely disappointed by the speeds of ADSL. On the plus side, there's happiness with that 'plug in and forget about it' stability.

Just as another personal note, I also started out on that 20GB/4Mbps package, and couldn't believe how quickly I hit into the cap. I then 'upgraded' to the 2Mbps/Uncapped package, and hated my decision for a whole month. Now I've just 'upgraded' again to the 4Mbps uncapped, and cross fingers everything should work better now! You might find a similar progression for yourself - I just advise skipping out on the 2Mbps/Uncapped altogether if you have any hopes at all of watching streaming video (buffering will be your new friend).

So my plan might save me from too much frustration/ disappointment. I plan to keep my 45gigs of LTE data for when i have the need for speed, or basically i'll use that for everything except game downloads and streaming. I decided to get Adsl mainly for my ps4 downloads and unlimited netflix streaming/ bbc iplayer/ youtube etc etc.

Currently getting 20-30Mbps speeds so a 4Meg line is definitely snail slow compared to that, am not expecting much in terms of speeds but rather looking forward to the volumes of Adsl. Will see about organising an uncapped account for when the 20gigs run out, night surfer should help as well though as this line will be primarily for downloads. Time will tell

Hi Kianm

May i ask what area you are in? I am currently battleing to move my line to new house i moved to, since beginning of December. (no ports) even thinking of cancelling current service and applying for a new one. Did you do the order in store or over the phone?

Yup, just got this now. Wasn't ayoba.

when I ordered my line I sent a pm to the Telkom facebook page and they contacted me. was connected within a week. try that method as you have a name of the person that is dealing with it just makes life easier to follow up.

Less than 2 weeks and line dead dead dead already. Was working well all along and today it rained (not sure how heavy) whilst i was at work so i got home to a dead line and adsl (no dial tone nothing zilch).

What could have happened??? At least i still have my LTE handy
:(

Edit: Reported a fault as no sevice& got ref. Hope they are quick

Update on my line application:

Transferring my previous line is still waiting to happen. So applied for a new one (don't care about the number) after many appointment changes I managed to get hold of the technicians manager and his managers manager. Anyway they came yesterday and the line is up and running, no ADSL though. Contacted telkom yesterday to activate it. Then they said that the technician hasn't closed the job on the installation so they cant do anything, yes really!

Anyway they also said that it looks like no ports are available at the exchange :( so how long do I have to wait to get a port? Any way to help speed this up?

Am needing Internet at home to do work.
