Hi guys,

My SO wants to get ADSL (Telkom ADSL line). How does she go about doing this? She needs the line installed but does not necessarily want to use Telkom as her provider. She has a usage of about 6Gig a month but some unlimited local would be cool too. All cheap-ish options will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Dat

Please confirm with her that it MUST be ADSL.

If yes, will she be using the landline to make calls?

If yes, calls to other landlines or to cell numbers?

Howsit big M,

All of the above, boet, but with limited landline calls. She Skypes a lot.

If the Telkom 3 month free ADSL promotion is still on, then she must start with that. It ends VERY soon iirc. This way she gets free installation and only pays for the "Telkom tax" on the landline plus for the calls made.

For the extra bandwidth take either an uncapped OpenWeb/MWeb account or a capped account from any ISP.

Once the promo is over she can elect to kept the ADSL service but then re-select her ISP.

Do not sign ANY term contracts!

Ok, thanks man. I will chat to you further via PM wrt this if that's cool.

Much appreciated.

Go love your wife ;)

Dude you should get that cellc special for 199 a month, 10gb. Should do everything she wants to do and it will work out cheaper plus it will be available almost anywhere, so if she has a laptop she can skype anywhere at anytime if she pleases :D.

Most folks have skype so the telephone is pretty much dead, how much is 384 these days with line rental mickey?

I asked the Mobile question - answer was no. If it was yes, I would have recommended the 8ta 10gb for R199 offer.

No existing landline would mean an installation charge. ADSL self install is free or used to be, don't know if it still is. As has been said take the Telkom trial "marriage" promotion if it's still on. With only 6G I don't see what good local would be as it only kicks in after the blended cap is used then she'll be stuck on local only. Rather get a bit larger cap or cheap uncapped for casual usage.

Honestly though I don't see why anyone would want dsl for casual use unless they already require a landline. Even up to 10GB right now it makes more sense to use wireless and then you also don't need to worry about extra security and account being hacked.
