New to ADSL - need some advice

Hi, guys
Thinking of getting the HomeDSL 384 package, but before I do that I need some
info.
1. What ADSL 'modem' (router) should I buy? I need to connect two computer at home to the Net.
2. I'm looking for 'no cap' ISP - which one is a good one in terms of price/performance?

Antonio - The no-cap providers are all only one connection at a time on the router, so you're going to have to use internet connection sharing or have the router connect for you. So get a router that can be configured to connect for you (No PPOE).
And then the router may as well also be a hub/switch.

Can I just buy a 'normal' ADSL modem, connect the one PC to the Net, and use two network cards to share the connection between the two PCs?

Antonio - Routers can be very easy to use - Most of the time, the default settings should work 100%. The added bonus of the router is that you can then connect more than two PC's!!

If you choose to just buy an ADSL Modem, then I suggest you buy an internal or USB version or else you will need 2 Network cards for the one PC.

Also, since you have discovered this forum, you should know that there is almost no problem that some of the folks here can not solve (except maybe for Global warming, but I fear that we might even got some ideas on that aswell).

Antonio - I run 1 ethernet modem connected to a WinXP "server" on 1 network card that runs internet connection sharing. Then the other network card on the server is connected to a switch, to which my 4 other pc's are connected.
But - the reason that I do this is so that I can run 1 proxy server on the "server", and one firewall on the "server".
I use a proxy so that I don't download the same stuff over and over, and the proxy is configured to store stuff for 30 days - 50GB.

That suits me fine, and the ADSL Modem -> Server -> Switch -> LAN route works for me, but it does make hosting games or bittorrents or websites or ftp sites tricky.

So - to answer your question - yes you can, but there are other choices, like getting an ADSL router instead, and then there is no central "server" problem/solution, and you don't have to keep one machine running all the time.

lol, I have nothing against the global warming, the hotter the better if you ask me

That still doesn't answer my qiestions though. I went to check for ADSL modem, and found one at Incredible Connections for R 700.00, I'm sure I can find a cheaper one - the question is where?

see this thread. If you want cheap, this would be my best buy, but maybe wait for the upgrade 5102S.
