Hi guys. I want to move over to ADSL next month. Atm I am with iburst and want to get an uncapped ADSL account.

Not the thing is I really know very little about all the ADSL pricing when it comes to line conversions, etc. We have a pay as you go account with Telkom and from what I've heard I will need to change the pay as you go to a contract one. Does anyone know if there is any cost involved in doing this?

From what I understand after that I need to call Telkom and ask them to activate ADSL 384kbs service on our line (I also heard something about needing to get some kind of converter. I am also unsure about the costs of that) and wait for them to activate them.

Then as far as I understand it's a simple matter of installing the modem and calling/mailing the ISP we want to get internet from.

Is there anything that I missed?
Help appreciated.

AFAIK you can not enable ADSL on a prepaid Telkom line (I might be wrong tho) so I'm assuming you would have to call them and ask to be 'upgraded' to a non-prepaid line. I'm not sure what the cost are wrt doing that. It's free to enable ADSL on your line and then you just start paying per month for the services (line rental and ADSL rental). I'm on one of the Closer Telkom plans - it's R145 for the line rental, R152 for the ADSL rental (both paid to Telkom) and R219 to Mweb for Uncapped. R516 in total for my 384 kbps line :)

Was just about to post the link myself :D

@Qrox, remember to ask for the ADSL self install option to save the R400+ installation fee when activating ADSL on your line.

Will do so. Also, is the R145 for the normal phone rental the cheapest option, cause thats still pretty expensive when you add it to all the other things you pay for per month...

No, I pay R131 per month. But that is without the Closer 1 plan activated. I never use the landline so it's pretty much a waste for me as well. But not much you can do about it

I was using 3G from Vodacom for the past couple of months, and if you'll be using less than 2GB a month I still think that is the cheapest option (@ R389 / 1GB) but once you go over that, ADSL becomes much cheaper.

Thx. Wish they would just remove the analog line rental factor from the adsl equation already...
