Hi I'm interested in ordering the Vodacom USB E220 modem on the Data Messenger package...I'm new to broadband...It doesnt come with much Megs...only 40Mb's but its enough for me as I dont download to much on my existing Telkom Dial-Up anyway...Probaly 10-15 Mb's per month on average...I do however spend lots of hours on the internet...Around 15hours per week for work purposes and to stay in contact with family overseas...Does the amount of time spent on the internet use up Megabytes even if you dont download?

Well im not that clued up with broadband but i think you mean 400mb you wouldn't get far with 40 i mean windows updates would cap you in a day...
and i think 400mb would be enough but don't take my word for it wait for the others to reply..

I agree... you must mean 400MB... 40 will absolutely get you know where. And regarding whether time spent online counts as part of your bundle even if you dont download...??? Well that would be a yes and a no. No because with a bundle you are billed by how much you download not by how long you spend on the internet, but at the same time yes, because when you are viewing webpages you are constantly downloading from the source of the page.

If you have 400MB, that should be ample for someone just doing web browsing... I only had 425MB with MTN and that was enough even with sneaking in a few songs here and there.

Hope that helps.

The Vodacom USB E220 modem on the Data Messenger package is the smallest of the range and you do get 40Mb's with the Package at R85.00 per month and it doe include the E220 Modem. It is ok for some one that does not download much, but keep in mind that your Anti-virus program does update every time that you log on.

I am on the My Gig 1 for the past month and at this stage I can monitor my usage. If 1 gig is not enough I can upgrade to 2 gig, or buy an extra amount of Mb's for the month, but when you buy extra you pay more for it as to upgrade. If I buy 1 gig it cost me R289.00, but if I upgrade my package to My Gig 2, then it is only R100.00 more that the My Gig 1

If i were you I would stick to the dial up, cause if you are planning on using the internet in the evenings the speed will be slower than your 56k dial up. I got suckered into a two year contract. now the only decent time to use it is on weekends and suring the day (which i cant cause i work). Vodacom seriously need to upgarde their network, I would like a more stable connection. I mean thats what I signed up and pay for and thats what I want. Everyday you read posts by users moaning about the slow speed between 7-11pm.

You need to be realistic about your needs. Sure, unlimited superfast is great, and that's what a lot of people will tell you that you need (and to be fair, if you had it you'd probably use it!), but it doesn't sound like you need it. If you need to be online but not necessarily doing anything, you should be okay with this package.

The Data Messenger package does come with 40Mb, and that should be fine for you. The amount of time spent doesn't directly relate to using up your 40Mb - if you're connected but not doing anything, it won't use up your allowance. But, if you're connected to something like MSN Messenger, it will use up a little bit because it's constantly getting updates about your contacts from the server. Same for email - if you only log in to your email now and then, you'll only use up your allowance when you check your mail. But if you stay signed in and let outlook (or whatever) tell you when you've got mail, it'll use up a bit of your allowance because it will check every few minutes to see if you've got mail.

So if you're just using instant messaging, email, and a bit of browsing you'll be okay. If you want to download anti-virus updates, and windows updates (which you probably should, but probably aren't now anyway) it might get a bit tight - especially for windows updates. Bear in mind that you're more vulnerable if you're permanently connected, too, so the updates are a good idea.

I'd say, check whether you can buy add-on bundles with this package (which you probably can), then go for it and try it out on 40mb. If you find you're running short, you can buy more as you need.

Thank people for your advice...Yes I was thinking about the 40Meg Package but I might go bigger...I saw an 40Meg package in action today and the megs disappeared to fast for my liking...Again lotsa thanks for the input:)

I will suggest that you rather go for the Topup 135 or topup 200 package. For the TU135 contract you pay just less than 600 for the modem and R179 on the TU200 contract. With the included amounts you can purchase data bundles and add money for bigger data bundles with discounted recharge vouchers from Pic a Pay.

The unused amounts (money not data) are transferred to the following months.
