So I decided to open an account with FNB to see how it goes. For now just a cheap cheque account and then a savings account.
Getting started was a bit of a schlep - the 35%'ers are everywhere... even in the FNB branches. It looks like I'm mostly sorted now at least.

A question though, I have the mobile app and can see my accounts - but I don't have online banking.
The same username/password doesn't work and it seems online banking needs your card details and ATM pin.

I don't have a card, so how am I supposed to register for online banking?
Will I need to get a card before being able to get online banking?

Holy heck FNB is as bad as every other bank.
They just transfer you from one place to another.

So far, just to set up a simple account with mobile/online banking it's taken me an hour in a branch and 2 hours on the phone and I'm still not sorted.

Look I'm with FNB and pretty happy but I will say - signing up was a mess for both me and my wife.
This was a good few years back.
So can't help you but hey, you're not the only one.

Yes it might be a hassle to open up an account but it's due to preventing fraudsters. Even capitec you still have to go in the bank to go collect your card/have it delivered for a fee. And fill out paperwork.

FNB app is by far the best banking app. I'm sure they even can stand tall against other international bank apps.

After opening up an account at FNB branch. You should never have to set foot into bank branch again.

They won best banking app in the world a couple of years ago.

That's not true at all. Everything is done digitally now.

Update:
Was on the phone again on Thursday afternoon with FNB.

After a few transfers from place to place and 30 minutes on the phone I spoke to a manager who said that I need some inContact thing setup, and you can only do that at a branch.

This is after I went into the branch and told me that everything should be sorted.

I'm also struggling to transfer money straight from my non-FNB account to my new FNB tax free savings. That was also another 20 minutes on the phone.

I'm gonna have to take the morning off some time this week and refuse to leave the branch without having everything sorted.

The experience is exponentially worse than Capitec and Standard Bank. By far the most incompetent staff and call centre, even though their online banking experience may be the best.

I beg to differ. I opened up a Capitec account early this year online and still had to fill and sign some paperwork at the branch when I collected my card.

The only true digital experience I had was with Tyme Bank. But can we really call them a bank. I only use them due to their savings rates.

Went in to change my number two weeks ago and they had to scan every finger so everything can be done digitally. Even the access facility I opened last year was all digital.

Getting any good customer experience from any bank is rare these days (when there are issues) . Unless you paying extra for it. Such as private bankers.
