Hi

I am considering getting a PVR.

Although I already have an LG RH1999 DVD Recorder, my problem is I have a plasma with no tv tuner :o , so it picks up it's signal from my DSTV decoder, therefore if i want to record something from DSTV I cannot change dstv's channel neither can I change the DVDRecorder to watch sabc1,2,3 or etv cos it's recording dstv.

The PVR from what i gather will solve my problem but i have heard there are some problems and that i should wait for the "new" version PVR to come out or something.........anybody have any comments regarding this ? or is the PVR fine as it currently is ?

ive heard that pvr is not good with plasma leaves burns if you pause the tv but im not sure

i dont have pvr but my buddy does and its freakin amazing

I use mine with a plasma and havent had any problems with burn in but some channels are obviously going to be worse than others - eTv comes to mind

Only complaint I have is it generates a fair bit of heat.

There is/was a problem with the PVR and I believe DSTV have been working on it. In fact the new software compensates for some of the problems. The PVR will now start to record well before a programme begins and end later. That was one of the issues anyway - missed recordings.

The technology is quite intricate and no PVRs have got it perfect.

Sounds like you need a box with more than one tuner. I don't think the PVR has this but the Dual View does. Maybe the next h/w version with have both and a bigger hard drive.
(You do know that you can't do much with the actual recordings on the HDD like you can with your LG)

The PVR lets you watch two channels while recording a third.
Im sure it would when ur on eTV at midnight... ;)
That's not your idea of porn is it  ;) :p

The PVR lets you watch two different channels while recording a third different.

..edited for clarity  - in other words it has 3 receivers. They are working on the software to allow you to record 2 different channels while viewing a 3rd different one.
Also from what I understand, the new PVR's have a better fan than the first ones that came out so it is not prone to overheating although the unit still gets hot and needs sufficient ventilation (i.e. not to be placed on top of DVD /VHS recorder in a cabinet.

I personally have a 12v PC fan sitting on top of my PVR running off a 7.5v ac adaptor.

I'm quite happy with it - works great for recording channels to watch later so much so that I have not had the need for a DVD recorder.
