Hi all,
Having landed on the sunny shores of Cape Town last week and leaving behind my 8MB download speed and unlimited allowance (no caps there except in the rain) all costing under £20.00 pm, i find i am facing what can only be described as a joke! I am still trying to understand how it can cost so much to access international web sites?
I have looked at my m8s internet usage and it would seem that any upload contributes to his monthly allowance.... is this correct?. if so then bit torrent is out the window....lol
Also if a web page is viewed on an overseas site is this counted towards the cap or is it only if you download something from that site?

I have heard something about some cable being laid on the sea bed for internet, what the general opinion, will this remove the international cap, speed up connections and bring down the price?

I know this is a lot of questions in only my second post but would be gratefull if you guys would bring me up to speed.....
 
yes browsing international/local sites are counted in your cap , the price ***SHOULD*** drop by alot once the sea cables become active hopefully this year or next year

:(:sick: More like two decades, I am still looking for a cheap uncapped internet connection since I came back from overseas 3 years ago. I refuse to pay exorbitant prices for an ADSL line so am using a 3G modem. But that has its shortfalls to. If anyone knows of an uncapped connection I will be the first in line. Price within reason of course.:eek:

I used to have an uncapped dial up connection that was almost as fast or even faster than what I currently have for only $9.95 per month.

Ouch dude, coming from overseas to a land without uncapped internet and extremely high broadband costs, the adjustment might take a while to get used to. But lets hope when the Seacom cable goes operational, it will provide us with cheaper prices and *maybe* uncapped or rather bigger caps to work with for international access and that local access would be free :)

a joke that none of us find funny at all... to answer your first question, yes, with SAIX and prolly IS too uploading contributes to your cap. the amount up and down are added together to give the total they call 'blended'

Well, the link above is a good place to get started with in your search for the "best broadband for your rand".

I assume you will be wanting to play games online (international as well).

You know it's sad that when you convert what you were paying in to rands you can't even get a service that is half way decent for that price.

start practicing by listening to one track of PJ powers over and over again for 35 minutes, that will get you used to the help lines.
start taking notes of the excuses given by help line and see how long it takes from them to work their way through the list of approved excuses.

most of all anjoy the likelyhood of your lines being down longer than they are up.

Yes, here, bandwidth is technological gold. And always in short supply. You know, I heard somewhere that SA is already oversold at a 10:1 ratio, and SEACOM is probably only gonna dent that.
 
things could be worse i seopse, we could be in china where b/w costs even more and there's the great firewall to cope with. or north korea where the internet is banned

Welcome to SA fellow alien :)
You know there is Neotel, giving you uncapped access for R 999/month, which is still grossly overpriced but cheaper than all the others. Also the last mile is covered by a wireless device so you're indepedent from Telkom's aging copper wires. In fact you can avoid having to deal with Telscum altogether. Oh, and phone calls are much cheaper too.
So if you can live with bad pings this is the way to go.

And I would curb my enthusiasm regarding the new undersea cable. Some scammers will use it to oversell the capacities even more. But I wouldn't bet on a significant price decrease.
 
Hi Bliz, m8 i feel your pain, there is only one solution to getting affordable fast internet in South Africa, do you have an incubator, like the ones they use on long space Journeys?, well get one of them and set it for 4096, 4096 will be a very special time for SA as we finally move to uncapped, now you will have to reset the machine if you want the prices to be affordable, to the year 7029 - Bliz its a joke m8
