New to Windows Phone, software/firmware update process?

HI, getting a 1020 and wanted to ask one question, I hate waiting months and months for updates through Vodascum, is there a way to get the latest windows updates one one's own, or do you have to wait for Vodascum to release the updates with their junk in? One of the reasons I love Android is due to the fact that I can do stuff when I want, and not be held to ransom by carriers, so just wanna find out if windows is the same? thanks
 
You should remember that is ONLY a PREVIEW that is NOT perfect. The official CYAN update has started rolling out via OTA in Argentina and is due to rollout in RSA as rumoured in July/August 2014.

I honestly cannot find anything that doesnt work perfectly on it. 8.1 dev preview is great.
 
Have also installed WP 8.1 Preview and loving it. No issues on my L920. MS also issue updates to 8.1 Preview, so any issues will be corrected.

Remember that WP8.1 is the OS, rolled out by Microsoft. Cyan is firmware, developed by Nokia for use on the Lumia range with WP8.1 only.

So while MS have the Dev Preview for WP8.1, we're still reliant on our local SPs to roll out Cyan. Judging from previous updates from MTN, this will probably only in the last quarter of this year.

Now that MS have taken over the Lumia line, not sure if they will roll-out Cyan independant of our local SPs or not.
 
thats the problem being reliant on SPs for firmware... hate that! if its available somewhere I wanna download it and install, not have to wait for vodascum to decide if/when they'll do it!
 
thats why I've so enjoyed the Android clan, as soon as anything firmware or software is released anywhere, one can get it and install it. had the 808 pureview, superb cam but OS was a bit dodge, so am keen to give the 1020 a whirl, but hate not being in control of when I can upgrade or not, frustrates me, that I have to wait for Vodacom makes it even more harsh... eish

Fully agree. I have been using 8.1 for 3 weeks now and it's working great. It's stable and fast.
It's also nice to get the latest editions when microsoft makes it available.
 
do Vodacom add a whole lot of 'junk' to the firmware? if they do can it be deleted? thanks

Never noticed any vodacom specific junk included in the firmware on my L920. I see its great that everyones excited about the 8.1 dev preview being good, personally I am waiting on the official. If the change is as good as everyone keeps saying then it will make the last few months till the upgrade end of this year go quicker :) That and the phone currently works perfectly fine for my usage so dont have a burning desire to update to something new.
