Why don't they rather start a tournament where they take every top team in the local championships (Currie Cup, French Top 14, ITM Cup ect.) and replace the Super Rugby tournament with that? That way all countries can participate and we will see some great talent and every year we might see new teams.

Just an idea.

I'd rather see a UEFA Super Cup style once-off game at the end of the season. Super Rugby champions play the European champions. Two-legged playoff so each team gets a home game in conditions that suit them the best.

I don't think there will be enough time or even if the calendars will allow it.

The SH season runs within a calendar year (February - October), so, 4-months of Super Rugby to start the year, mid-year tours, 2-months to complete the Rugby Championship, domestic cups, a short break and then end-of-year tours.

The NH season runs on a September/October - May cycle with mid-year and end-of-year tours lining up with the SH calendar. The Heineken Cup and domestic championships run from the previous September/October and runs until May with the Six Nations in February - March.

An end-of-year competition will clash with the NH club calendar and if you could you would be losing your top players to end-of-year tests.

The consensus, even from up north, is that Super Rugby is considered the benchmark of club/franchise rugby, so I reckon our teams would dominate such a competition. The pace and physicality is considered to be far higher than that of European club rugby. Hence the reason why SH players can demand some of the highest wages in world rugby. European and Japanese clubs are willing to pay a fortune for marquee Boks, All Blacks and Wallabies.

But I think an annual champion vs champion game would attract a lot of attention, especially up north.
