this post is going to be slightly vague as I am posting before I have actually seen the issue, but maybe it is a common-ish issue and someone can help.

so my parents bought a new LED TV, their previous was the old 74cm 'crt' type tv. they have hooked it up, but apparently the colour is off (don't know what this actually means but I will see tomorrow). they checked with the game where they bought the tv, and the game salesman says it dstv decoder causing this.

the decoder is a dsd 1131, which if I remember correctly is a newish model (SD not HD) but that should not be causing the colour issue, or could it?

what tests can I perform tomorrow? I don't have dstv so I can't test with a different decoder but will be taking my laptop along.

ps: if it is the decoder, can I on their behalf, go to dstv in randburg and swap for a newer decorder?

If they mean black and white then set tv colour system to auto. Probably though they're just being old farts and it's too bright for them or something. :p

Also, and sd picture can look a bit washed out on a hd tv. Get them a new HD decoder.

it should pretty much look like sabc 3 does on my Samsung 3d tv right? nothing worse?

if the decoder should be swapped from SD to HD, will dstv give me (as I will have to go) a good price seeing as I am swapping ie don't want to spend 799 on a decoder and drive 70km from kempton to randburg, then I will just drive 7km to DionWired and spend 799

Probably what has happened is that they have put the old RCA connectors in to the composite ports (RGB), composite takes 3 cables, one for each colour. RCA takes just the one, so when you plug RCA in to composite you just get one colour.

Bad news is that the new TV might not have RCA and the old decoder only has RCA. Sucks.

They might need a new decoder.

Ja, I'm just guessing really. People see the demo in the store and don't understand why their pic looks terrible by comparison. Could be as Nerfherder says. The green component is usually also the composite in so try that.

Don't know about any discounts for existing customers, can't hurt to ask. The new decoders are only R500. R799 with dish and installation which is probably worth it if they have an old 60cm dish. You can set up the HD so long and then there's no real rush for the dish to be installed.

is rca yellow (pcture), with red and white (sound), and the other green, blue and red? work blocks most sites, so I can't actually check now.

I am waiting for the tv model, so maybe with that we can really see if it is hte decoder

Yes, they plug in to each other so people often make that mistake and then there is no colour

That would be my guess.

Get them to take a picture of where they plugged it into the tv.
