Hey all,

It's time for a new TV. My budget is R10 000 and so far my top choice is the PS51E550 from Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/nz/consumer/tv-audio-video/television/plasma-tv/PS51E550D1MXRD

This seems like a great deal: 51", built in wifi, 3D, full HD, plasma.

I just have three questions if someone could please help out:

- I've heard that plasma's use more electricity than LCD/LED. Is it really that much of a difference? We watch roughly 2.5 hours of TV each day during the week and more on the weekends. We currently have an old CRT TV. Are we going to have a big increase in electricity?

- 80% of our tv viewing is series streamed from an HD media player. 20% is movies also from an HD media player. No sport or gaming. Is plasma the way to go?

- I've heard plasma's can have more glare/reflection because they have a glass front panel. Is it really much of an issue? As mentioned, we currently have an old CRT which has a glass front panel and the glare is present but not the end of the world. Would an LED/LCD be noticeably better?

I haven't seen anything else in the 51" size range for under R10 000. This seems pretty good.

Many thanks.

1. No, there is not much of a difference. Maybe R20 - R40 per month.

2. Yes. Picture quality will be superior than similarly priced smaller LCDs, larger size, etc.

3. An LCD would not be noticeably better, since 99% of them also have glossy fronts these days. Slightly less reflective, but not much.

I have a 51" Samsung FHD Plasma 3D TV. It is brilliant. Even family members with LED TV's are shocked at the clarity of the TV. I love it.
The only problem is reflections, easily remedied by closing the curtains but it is a problem nontheless

Great, thanks for the replies. I think im going to go ahead and get it unless I hear a good reason not to before. My only concern is the reflections, but I can't see how it will be any worse than my current CRT tv. In which case it's a hassle, but not the end of the world.

I know a few people including myself who are really happy with the 51inch plasma(a mix of the B,D,E models)

I would say the glare is about the same as the flat crt tv's but of course its now a much larger area but the E model is much better than the older ones.

I can only echo what the other guys said. I have the 51" D550 and am exteremely happy with it. I rate it I was one of my best purchases ever.
