Does anyone know when the new undersea cable will be completed and who will have controlling share???

I hope this will do huge damage to Telkom.... they deserve it!!!!

Telkom has a stake in it , as well as Sentech and Vodacom. Not sure what the SNO will do

Still is a long way to go. Possibly ready for 2012 as then HDTV must also be ready thus between 2007 and 2010 would be a guess. Hope by then at least MyAdsl tone is quiet different, They will have to plan for better VB as it is running out of bandwidth

Wanna bet that Tyco Telecommunications entered a bid to lay the cable. Tyco as you might know is now owned by VSNL (a la SNO).

How much difference is it going to make to global connectivity for South Africa? I looked at the web site, and it only seems to bring connectivity between east african countries. Are they going to use SAT3/SAFE to link this network to the rest of the world? If so, it might be bad for the South African consumer (in the short term) as the available bandwidth on SAT3/SAFE will decrease. Or am I missing something? We need a terabit connection to the U.S. East Coast.

telkom, sentech and the SN0 (still not operational) are the only three companies allowed to "import" bandwidth so everone still pays one of those three.

I doubt therefore that there will be a price decrease anytime soon...

bwana : Owning Tyco Telecommunications wont help them get access to the line, or am I missing something here?

The new cable which will be only operational way after 2010 is only on the East coast of Africa and not to Europe or the Far East so it does not supplement/replace SAT3/SAFE

Here is the route http://eassy.org/basicRoute.htm
