Nearly all applicants for US visas will have to submit their social media details under newly adopted rules.

The whole world is screaming invasion of privacy at this moment. Personally, I think that this is just another level of messed up.

There are lots of stupid people in the world who share too much info on social media. I certainly would raise an eyebrow towards people who posted lots of anti-American material on social media and yet applied to work there.

Why? It's in the interest of any country to have as much information on people coming in as possible.

Do you really think that they would gain any useful information from social media? I mean, most social media are people full of bravado, who doesn't have the guys to act out the things that they post on social media. If it's terrorists that they're after, they're looking in the wrong place. Besides, most of the US terrorism is domestic anyway.

Secondly, you don't know who will be looking at this information and how it would be used - that, alone, should scare you.

Also, this is a government - and a foreign one at that - wanting access to your private information. There are local and international laws regulating this. I don't think that a background check is sufficient justification to pry to such depths.

US employers already use social media profiles to vet their applicants ; this is squarely aimed at visitors.

From the BBC article, it does not include what one would typically as "tourists/visitors". Both working and studying would usually involve at least one year, but most likely multiple years of staying in the US.

However, people travelling to the US to work or to study will have to hand over their information.

Yesterday the U.S. State Department began implementing its requirement that nearly all U.S. visa applicants submit their social media usernames, previous email addresses and phone numbers as part of the application process. The new requirement, which could affect up to 15 million would-be travelers to the U.S., is part of a broad expansion of enhanced screening under the Trump administration.

The one exception is diplomats.

Their country, their laws.

The only thing is this; it's not a law.

Countries have reciprocal agreements when it comes to visa requirements. This would be in breach of such an agreement. Also, you don't encourage tourism by making it more difficult for people to visit your country.

I thought it's aimed at long term stay and not the average tourist...

Makes sense. A country must protect its borders and AI can day a lot about your personality from social media.

With our AI engine we can define who you are from your Twitter account.

Well there goes my plans for travelling to the US. I'm no fan of Trump or the Dems.

Let us say if US embassy asks you this information and you argue with them that it is not the law, it is probably tickets for your visa chances. How would you fight their non-law as a non-US citizen from a non-US land?

Also, I doubt if US needs to encourage tourism.

The information people gleefully vomit out to the entire world is all of a sudden precious when asked for by a government? Don't really see it as an invasion of privacy, tho I agree using some algo to scan your social media to determine your eligibility to enter a country seems a bit hectic.

Nothing stopping other countries from doing the same. I think it’s a great idea. Keep some riff-raff out of the UK. Ofc, they will always be welcome in Trumps America :)
