So it seems my hoover vacuum cleaner gave his last breath this weekend so it needs to be replaced.

What suggestions or recommendations do you guys have?

KARCHER (a colleague swears by it - not the prettiest)
Im actually having a look at them now. Is it not better to buy a water filter system vacuum or is it just marketing hype?

IMHO it is hype. We have both systems. The water one you have to empty the water immediately (after use) and let the machine dry outdoors otherwise it PONGS! (a small amount left causes a huge stink)

Thanks very much. Think I will do more research into the karcher units.

I use a Karcher WD5.200 at my brewery and that thing impresses all the time with how much (wet and dry) stuff it copes with. I think I paid about R2k.

Bought the Electrolux 1850W for R799.00 on Monday from Makro. The maid broke the old one. Have not used it yet. Also a wet and dry one. Not pretty to look at this machine ... but hopefully it will do the job.

Cant attest to this. Our old one was a water filter one. The maid put it back into the cupboard without letting it dry the one day and it stank to high heaven a day or two later.

I had a water filtration vacuum cleaner...I made damn sure it was broken when I moved house. It is the biggest cr@p you could buy as a vacuum cleaner.

Way too much effort to simply vacuum up a mess quickly or give the room a quick hoover.

Bagless is the way to go.

Just got an Electrolux Bagless vacuum cleaner for under a thousand bucks. Works perfect. 1900W. Tiny and easy to use quickly and put away again. What more do you need?

Ohhhhh we can be Electrolux buddies ..... nothing sucks like a Electrolux ey? Well, appart from us of course. :D:p

Just bought a karcher from makro so thanks for the suggestions guys. Salesman (hoover) tried his best to keep me away from the karcher units but Im positive that I made the right choice.

The electrolux units are priced decently but the only reason not buying one is that I dont know the brand.

Looks like the karcher can suck hard.
