Hey all

Im thinking bout getting iburst and maybe a second hand desktop modem and was wondering if there was any difference between the white older version modem and the newer one (better performace, signal, compatibaility etc...) . I'll probably try to add a wireless router aswell if that makes any difference.

Also could someone suggest a wireless router that works well with the desktop modem.

thanks

Old modems are best...

I have obtained better reception with the older desktop modems than with any of the other modems, however the newer models does look smarter…

As for routers most should work, if you are looking for a feature rich router try Netgear.

This topic has been discussed several times now. Search this forum for the various answers.

AFAIK there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the old and new, but I'm happy with my old UTD. UTDs obtain better reception than UTCs (PCMCIA card) - and the UTD with ethernet is more versatile than the USB-only UTU.

As for routers, NetGear and Linksys seem to be the most recommended manufacturers. It all depends on how much you have to spend, and what functionality you want. I can personally recommend the Linksys WRT series (I use the WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware) as a good set of routers.

Mods, can we have one of these topics (perhaps one already answered) as a sticky for future reference? Or it could be added to an existing FAQ topic...

Thanks for the info guys

but as far as searching the forums go, i gave up long time ago. It may be that i dont know how to use it properly but it seems to be most retarded search engine i've come across... especially when it throws out all the words of 3 letters or less... not very helpfull

It's really not bad if you use the advanced search. But I must admit I have also been very frustrated with the >3 letters search stipulation. So many ITC terms have only 2 or 3 letters.

I've found the best way to get around the pesky 3 letter problem is by focussing elG on the forum by way of the 'site' modifier, as in "site:mybroadband.co.za <enter search term>". You can also further focus that by the "+" attribute. So, I often do a "site:mybroadband.co.za +bdt +<what_I'm_looking_for>" for what I'm after.
