:DI installed a Dell 5530 WWAN in my Dell XPS 1640 and had to use the Dell software to connect. It is great and should work on all the networks. But it is very basic.
Nothing from VC download site worked before I last night discovered their latest offering.
Wow! it found my new device in a flash and works like a charm.
Pity that the VC4Me site could not be found on their link clicking on to the 9.4.8.2129 upgrade.(broken)
But the workaround suggested worked OK.
This is a true Windows 7 upgrade.
BTW: Has the B970 firmware upgrade been sorted out by now? I would like to upgrade but not if the upgrade is still buggy!
 
Was this the one for sale on MBB classifieds?

@ morkhans. Yes it is and I think he still has 3 left. Check his other items for sale for his cell number.
I bought a Dell 5530, secondhand, but he had it in his laptop to prove that it worked. Nev is his name.
Thanks for you reply on the B970 firmware. I will go there now and check it out now.

Edit. Thanks morkhans. I'll keep the B970 as it is. Why try to fix what ain't broken. I really have not had a days' problem with it.

Ah ok. I have my eye on the Huawei EM770 at the moment. Not sure about the Dell (Ericsson) WWAN modules.

Looked up the Hauwei EM 770 and it looks the same as the Dell 5530/5540. (Ericsson) Maybe from the same manufacturer, but is see the d/l is higher.
The Dell 5530 is 7.2/2.0
For the R700 I paid, it is a bargain!
 
New they they are about R1500+ from Dell, so yeah that was a good deal.
 
Has anyone figured out a way to connect these internal 3G modems to an external 3G yagi antenna? Or is there still no solution for this?

Should be doable, but it's not going to be a pretty hack. You could use a MMC-SMA connector and let it break out somewhere in your notebook.

Well my son saw the modem in operation, so I have had to order another one from Nev to install in his Dell Studio 1555.
BTW. I got the built GPS working this evening (just settings) and its great on Google Earth and I presume Google Maps when available.
The Dell Studio XPS 1640 has a pretty decent aerial built in.
