Hi,
I'm a new adsl subscriber to the Telkom 384 package. I've got a 4 port v2 Marconi Router running from my ethernet card.

Funny bit , got my service activated this week, replaced 2 faulty Routers in one week. Not so funny when it happened tho.

My router is set up and line speed testing reads about 420/260, that came from a test at dsl reports.
It sounds ok? I don't think so. Downloads are choppy, surfing sucks, my pc is totally taking a knock from telkom tech support, so now I'm on this forum.

I have to reformat and blah blah blah. So I'm connected through the router gateway & I need some advice.

First question. The router has 4 leds
DSL LNK (ON) * * 100M (ON)
DSL ACT(flashing) * * LNK/ACT (Flashes only when TX/ RX)

Is this normal? When I swapped my router the guy said only the DSL ACT led should flash. What can i do about this problem? I think the modem has a sync problem and I already downloaded the firmware upgrade with no diff.

When I'm in a mmorpg , the led is constant for a while, then it flashes & the server drops me. Getting fed up with this.
The manual stinks of dead fish, tech support is a pain in the lower regions and I havent got a clue what the optimal settings for this Router could be. I decided to use the Router stand alone for quite some time before buying another Pc to LAN with, but at this rate I'll be using it standalone forever.

Doesn't anyone have the savy to compile a full featured instruction manual with default, optimal and or power user settings? F_CK telkom.

I haven't got a clue what to do next, I read about port forwarding..... da di da di da da. This is for consumers ****face! Not technology professionals.

How the hell do they expect old oom Piet van Tonder to set up his router after he had to reset the damn thing? Phone telkom?

Where is the localized software? The plug & play support.
It's just a Router, not a space ship. It's a space ship to me :(

Do I need to forward ports when using on one machine only?
Is it normal for the LNK/ACT led to flash?
How the Fu_k do you call this speed adsl?

Thank you, have a good weekend, enjoy your mothers love,
I will commit Rasaccre ( Router massacre)

No. Port farwarding is only used if you want to have a machine on you protected network visible on the internet ( on a particular port ).

Most firewalls only allow traffic to your machine, when that traffic is an answer to a request that your machine made. To allow traffic through that is not an answer ( ie its a request that some other machine made to connect ot you ) you would need port forwarding.

Port forwarding is normally not a good idea to do, but it is sometimes required ( esp for certain games )

Yebo, use spybot, xsoftspy and Adaware.

Is it normal for the LNK/ACT led to flash? Seems I have to answer my own questions.
Telkom Techsupport again. Talked to a guy that knew his stuff. Said NO. The problem is with the broadband line sir, I'll put it through testing for you. It can flash once in a while sir, but not so often, then it is a problem.
So we'll see.
Thanks anyways.

That makes me think - one day when Telkomonopoly is getting on my nerves - I'll call them up & say my broadband modem is doing the disco lights / deranged traffic light thang, why?...

Hi

The DSL LNK should be a steady glow and the DSL ACT should be blinking now and again. The DSL LNK just states that the DSL line is capable of carrying data. The DSL ACT light is just a light that shows DSL data traffic when and if it occurs.

If you download somehting it will seem like it is on permanently. If you're not, then it will only make occasional flashes.

If you have a LAN ACT indicator as well, you will see that the DSL ACT and LAN ACT lights are synchronized....

Does this answer you question?

Cheers
Ant

well, I also have that router, and I have the exact same problems, dropped line all the time. I completely isolated the router on the ADSL line, but it still sometimes wont connect. If I dial-out a number, then it works fine again, until someone phones, when it will just disconnect again. The router also makes an audible crackling on the line. The technician says he doesnt know what to do, and Ive tried my best to fix it, and as far as I can see, I think it has something to do on the other side of the line.also, they didnt bill us for the ADSL, but for our old services (meant to be cancelled). they then told us we must pay up for the bill now, and they will credit it later. What, for an ADSL line that only works sometimes? And now im capped, and I cant even play NWN online ON A LOCAL SERVER, cause it needs to authorize with the international server. what a rubbish service.

could get a new menu added to the support line.... " If you need to turn off the disco lights on your router" ... press 5

I should clarify, the disco lights problem is an iBurst modem thing - I was just saying I would try running intereference one day with the Telkomonopoly people just to confuse them.

Although WiMax is definitely going to confuse the Telkomonopoly people:
"sir/madam can we send a technician to test your line";
"but I do not have a line - it travels through the air";
"...*deafening silence*...the technician has been dispatched to your home/office...";
"arrrrg :mad:".
