Hi,
I hope someone can help me.
I have two desktop machines that are connected to a Telkom ADSL wi-fi modem via cables. In other words, both machines' network cables plug into the modem.

My question is this: Do I need to buy any additional hardware to be able to play games and share files between the 2 machines?

Do I need to get a router, or can the modem be my router?
Is it viable to play games via something like Hamachi, or does that consume too much bandwidth?

Thanks

Hamachi would eat your bandwidth like a hungry toed on a piece white salt!

If it's a wifi modem i assume that it has a lan function, not 100%

In order to play games and share files, each pc would need an ip i:e 192.168.0.1 ; 192.168.0.2

and then to gain access to the internet you would need to set the ip's to obtain address automatically

Correct me if i'm wrong

I take it you are talking about two machines connected to the same ADSL wifi "modem" at the same premises?

if so do dont need anything just create shares

I think you have a router not modem

If you have the Telkom supplied Marconi WIFI router (with 4 Ethernet ports plus wifi) it is a modem and router. You can play games etc and connect to Internet. You need to set up a home network and allocate shares etc. I have the same Marconi WIFI Router connected to 2 PCs by ethernet cable and a Laptop connected wirelessy. Play games such as AOE 3 etc over the home lan.

Yes, I have the Telkom supplied Marconi WIFI router with 4 ports. Cool, I don't need to go buy more hardware!
Now... I'm going to give it a try to make this all work.
Thanks for the answers, very helpful.

The router "should" be running DHCP by default.
Internal ip's will be in the 10.0.0.x range.
Go to command promt and type "ipconfig"
Should show you ur ip address :)
