Im about to get ADSL but i have a Question.

I moved into a townhouse and there is a line there from the tenant before. Anyway so i phonr scumkom and ask how do i activate it in my name so that i can get ADSL. They say i must pay a R700 deposit and a R300 setup fee just for the phone number and then its still the normal R92 for the line. then if i want ADSL its another setup fee of R404 and the monthly charge of R270. (I hate telkom )

So what i want to know is do i really need to pay the R300 setup fee for the line ? Dont they just have to activate it for me so i should pay less? And what is the R700 deposit?

TWO SETUP FEES THE BASTARDS!!!!!

sorry to tell u but unfortuntately yes. The R300 set up fee is for placing ur name under that line. Then u gonna have to pay for ADSL installation unless you do self-install which will save u the R404. I was in similar situation as u and paid R1100 that month to Telkom...

The R700 deposit is usually for people without a stable income or something like that. They scared u not gonna pay them..just unlucky to be in a country where telecoms service and pricing is so kuk.

R700 deposit is probably because you don't have good enough credit history. It's still less than the R1300 they asked me friend to pay as a deposit when he wanted ADSL installed.

Yes, even if they just push a button and activate the phone line, its going to cost you R300. This also happens if you default on payments and they cut your line off. You have to pay a reconnection fee of the same amount.

It's a ripoff. What did you expect?

that sux!!

that means that in the first month i will have to cough up almost R1200 to telkom alone! :(

Telkom levies deposits after credit checks. It is totally arb, but if you don't pay it they will not toutch you. I suffered this once when I wanted ISDN. They made me wait nearly a year before one day phoning to tell me that if I don't pay the deposit immediately they will cancel the order which has been ready for installation months before. Nobody told me about deposits at all.

Lucky for me ADSL arrived and I told them to **** off and rather give me ADSL. At that time my credit evaluation changed and no deposit was required. The funny thing is that people earning more than me are asked for deposits. So how much you earn is not the only factor here...

Actually it will take them so long you'll be able to spread it over a few months. :(
