I have Iburst on my PC with a usb modem, I want to allow my laptop (with wireless PCMCIA card) to connect simultaneously to the internet via the Iburst connection. I also want to use the laptop to connect to another wireless network at work but the signal is very weak.

I have been told I need a router for the PC/Laptop/internet connection? Can I use the same router with it's better reception (I hope) to connect to the work network?
If so can I use any router? Can someone recommend a router?

thanks

Graham

Well, they mean a wireless access point. If the iBurst connection is on the computer you would need to do Internet Connection Sharing to get it to the lappie. Your wireless configuration would be tricky.

I suggest setting up a proxy like privoxy on the pc for web browsing. That way the WiFi access point can dish out addies to your local lan and then you can simply add the proxy to your lappie's browser and off you go.

Thanks for your reply antowan, sounds rather complicated though. I thought I could just connect the iburst to the router/WAP enable connection sharing and then connect it to the PC (via cable or usb wireless dongle) and the laptop would connect wirelessly to the WAP?

Well, there must be iBurst routers, but with the USB modem you will have to hook it up to a pc. I haven't toyed with iBurst yet, but it will show a connection that you can share in your "network connections" view.

If you leave the WiFi AP out of the equation I would do it as follows using simple switch.

Share the iBurst connection on the desktop pc.

It will now dish out IPs using DHCP. So if you hook another pc like the laptop to the switch it should auto config the IP and you should see the Internet.

The problem comes when adding WiFi. The WiFi AP will like to be the DHCP man in charge, but you should be able to fix IP's on it. This will however always throw Internet Connection sharing out of whack and I am not sure how you will have DHCP propagate through the WiFi AP keeping the desktop in charge. It must be possible, but I fear I need to toy with this first.

After enabling sharing on the PC, I can share files etc but no matter what I try I cannot get the laptop to share the internet connection. I was told that using 2 "dongles" to create an ad-hoc connection does allow file sharing but not internet sharing hence the need for a router/WAP.

When I connect to the WAP at work it's no problem and I can get the 'net straight away on the laptop. I presumed (perhaps incorrectly) that the router/WAP would continue to allow the PC to connect normally and the laptop would connect to the router/WAP and access the 'net that way

I use this one: "USB Modem for laptops and desktops" no ethernet port

Just connect modem to pc and use CCProxy ( i have a thread in the vodacom section about how to set it up so just do a search and find out how to set it up )

Thats the easiest way i know how cos as many say use ICS, i recommend DO NOT cos it, in plain words, sucks. If you can ping the other pc using the wifi dongles then i see no need for a router, so long as you just sharing the connection between you and the lappie.

Hope that helps
