Hey guys and girls

I'm thinking of getting me the 512kbps uncapped mweb solution. but i was wondering, we are running on average 4 pc from our 512kbps line. if i was to add a dedicated downloading server to this network that is on 24/7 would it drastically affect the other pc's internet speed and will i still be able to play online on my pc while my server is downloading? and don't say downloading is wrong cause 85% of people in this country do it :p

Second, how is the mweb package. any complaints or negative views, specially from the gaming community, i mostly play cod:mw2, tf2 and very soon bad company 2. will i get decent pings on their shaped service?

Thanks:D

Mweb's service is shaped (if that is the option you are going for) so you would not be getting full download speeds 24/7 anyway. They also claim to use management programs that prioritise browsing etc on the end users PC.

Shaped != Throttled, furthermore. After hours throttling and port priority becomes more lenient.

as for localized game play, you will get around 23ms-45ms depending on the congestion of your exchange, and the amount of throughput on your line.

Using end user management software, where did you hear this or see this, they have a no snowballs chance in hell getting onto my machine.

Of course they use bandwidth management software on their network, but they're not working on an individual level.

I think he means the effect is seen on your PC, nothing gets installed onto it obviously.

Well obviously the downloading is going to affect the other PC's speeds, especially with 4 of them and a 512kb line. I think even though you can't get quite full speed for your downloads there won't be enough left to go around for 4 PC's. Maybe leave the download server for 1-7am or something? (and 85% of the country don't have internet..)

Also what are you needing to download 24/7? Isn't it close to physically impossible to actually find and schedule all those downloads and still actually watch/listen to anything you download? :p I'm sure you'll get bored of your download server some time... you're going to need a lot of hard drives.

Download addicts are just that addicts, i have a guy at work who has terrabytes of stuff and he hasnt even watched any of it. Im getting uncapped just so i dont have to have the hassle of oh crap am i running low on capz, i want to have the freedom todo what i want, im not going to try and pull down 500gb's a month.

And your point is? The OP asked about a 24/7 download server. My response indicated that he would not get full speeds 24/7. I can't see where your answer differs.

I never said software, I said end user management programs. The meaning of that is open to interpretation as is Mwebs terms. From their website :

However, contracts are governed by an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP), and contravention will lead to warnings and, if necessary, suspension. This policy is specifically designed to ensure that the activities of any one user do not have a detrimental impact on the user base as a whole. In the unlikely event that this does happen, MWEB Business will contact the user directly to discuss their usage and how to reduce the impact thereof.

A shaped service is a moderated way that data is delivered to your computer through your ADSL line.

Certain things are given priority over others, e.g. websites, are given priority over email being downloaded.

e.g. If you are downloading your email, and surfing the web, you will get to the web page first before your emails have completed downloading.

The above is relevant to the OPs question.

I think he means the effect is seen on your PC, nothing gets installed onto it obviously.

Yip, you interpreted it more accurately.

Well according to some reports in the feed back thread, people are getting full speeds. :) So not entirely sure where you are getting this "Not full speed" information.

My apologies programs vs software is kinda the same to me, also the term end user is generally used for the person using the service, if you said internal management systems it might have been a bit clearer

okay, interesting. what i meant by download server is im not an addict, its just that if i want the file, i can download it without worries. not just to randomly collect series'. but the idea of after hour downloading, i didnt even think of that and if i want to run it through the day i can just limit the speed to say 15KB/s. also i'll be more than happy with those gaming pings so looks like its thumbs up.

oh and 85% of the people that have internet :p
