Hi all,

I was viewing http://www.jawug.za.net/ and got interested in the idea(i couldnt sign up on their forum) so ill try here. I'd like to know, All in all, what sorta price a person is looking at for all the components(Antena, router? i donno all the hardware required for a person to join his/her computer to a wireless network)
I live in Paulshof, Sandton and viewed http://www.nodedb.com/index.php?id=23073

I see there's a few users in the area... But i wonder if i would receive signal, obviously you point your aerial/antenna towards one of the users? i dont know anything about wi-fi...

Please dont post links to websites with prices, as i donno what i would need. Just wanna know an estimate of cost for everything, and lastly, is it worth it, It's all very cool having connection to a wireless network, but is there any benefit.

Thanks for any replies. :)

Its all a very trial and error thing really. You just need to try :)

There is more than enough info about it on the Jawug site, but I'll help you out a bit by pointing you to the exact pages.

http://www.jawug.za.net/NodeTypes
They explain what you'll need for each type of node, and they explain how to tell what kind of node you need to build, and even instructions on Building those nodes.
This will determine what antennas you'll need, and who to point them to.

If you want to learn more about networking, and you're curious to know how things work, then join. You'll learn alot from the rest of the people simply by asking for help on getting things configured in the IRC channel..

Get yourself an IRC client, like mIRC, and connect to irc.jawug.za.net and join #wnet
Chat with the people there.. they know what they're doing.

in short, it is probably going to cost about R1000 (equipment) to join the network.

some of the advantages are gaming and file sharing. you could even talk (VOIP) to other users on the network. another advantage is that you could possibly link to a friend on the other side of JoBurg if he is connected to Jawug.

Thanks guys, There are gamers in the JHB area on JAWUG's network right?
Creating a Cantenna, is it line of sight?... R1000 isnt that bad to get on the network... it sounds interesting... !:D

Im also curious to know if i would be able to recive signal in my area which be Lonehill. I dunno which WiFi ISP's there are that have signal in Lonehill?

Snaz, Jawug does not provide Internet connectivity, its purely for fun and games, VOIP etc...

I do know however, that there are a couple of guys in Lonehill already (they call it lonewug AFAIK)

Check out www.jawug.za.net

Paulshof is not that far from Lonehill, if you have Line of sight you may also be able to get onto the lonewug

Check http://jawug.za.net/lonewug and http://www.jawug.za.net/Lonehill

Spectre, as Daffy says, come into IRC and do not be afraid to ask questions - that is the main reason we have the IRC Channel - basically a watering hole for discussing things we can do, guys helping each other to get things setup etc -

As for Wifi links - u probably are looking at around R1000 to get what you need - you pay that, and you keep the stuff - its yours. Jawug is free, we are non-profit and community run.

Come chat to us in IRC - You will be surprised at what you can actually do with this stuff.... I was also a wifi newbie not so long ago, but I am now a transit node - 4 seperate wifi links on my roof - connecting about 20 odd people together. Hope to see you soon!

All u really need is a R600-ish WRT54GL, Plus R300-ish Yagi and an Enclosure... plus a couple of sundries.....

Im really keen, Rhyder, thanks :D

Any1 confirming the games played on wi-fi in paulshof/lonehill, what sorta speeds you getting, games being played? Im right next to St Peters school on witkoppen road...
http://jawug.za.net/lonewug We're pretty 'high' up there, but will i get signal?

Spectre, even though I am quite an avid gamer, I dont really seem to get time for games these days - too busy helping people get connected! But I can tell you that I have a link to a friend a couple of kms away and we have played games in the past no prob.... Our connection is about 1MB a sec so games are no problem at all - pings are 2 or 3ms

Cool man, do you see where i stay in terms of receiving signal? next to St Peters school on Witkoppen road very close to "Darren"
