Having sat on the sidelines and absorbed information re ADSL,
3G etc I must first say thank you all for sharing the information.
Nowhere else offers first hand, unbiased information on what
seems to be a very messy topic.
As a 'gholf' I take time to work out whats best for my situation.
I live two hours out of Cape Town, no ADSL or 3G yet. But I have
decided to go GPS then 3G.Stuff Telkom.
Next month I go to UK for a short visit.
Question 1. If I buy a Vodacom 3G data card here can I put in a UK sim for
the duration of my UK visit and buy GPS bundles Pay as you go?.
Question 2. Option 2 would be to purchase a data card or mobile phone
in UK, but would I be able to use it back in RSA?
If so what recomendations.
I have a Toshiba Tecra A2 with wifi capability

Yes, i live in the U.Kand im going back to s.a for good:)
WHen you purchase the card from Vodafone in london. Just buy the card. But dont register it.
WHen you come back home you can use that card, since vodacom is vodafones official roaming partner in S.A.
Just buy the internet package register and go away.
Well i think its that, Correct me if im wrong guys.

Welcome to the forum!

Yes to both your questions. Best bet would be Option 1, i.e. buy a card on a contract here as you can then use it locally for the contract period.

If you buy a card (or phone) in the UK, you'll have to buy it outright and will cost you a packet. Then when you come back you'll still need to buy a data bundle at the same price as the data on a contract that would have given you a data card for free.

Using a UK pre-paid SIM makes sense as you'll pay the roaming rates (very expensive!) if you use your SA sim in the UK.

Best bet is to check out Vodafone UK's website for pricing.

Let me know where you stay and I'll check up on what GPRS, EDGE or 3G future you have.

How come there's no option for cheaper bundles for those who already have cards?

@MAD : Because they want you to sign a contract :D , and contract = gauranteed revenue! If you sign the contract without a card, you will get a rebate voucher or something similar. Possibly a phone if you ask nicely. But the wont pass on an actual discount!
