Newegg PSU calc

apparently i need a 879watt psu but when im playing games my system draws no more than 420watts max (yes i have a thing that monitors total wattage)

i think they over estimate just to make more sales on psu . . . bitches hehe

try this instead: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp which says i need 684 watts, even though i added some stuff that i havent installed yet

Mine came to 639w lfx not far off newegg's one.

Not much different hey, strange that my antec 550w can run 639w. guess that is why the bloody thing cost me 1k. Must have thing different about it

ODD :D

This sounds much better than the newegg one

says i need 545W

Well I run a CM 600W Silent Pro M and it works 100%, Newegg reckons I need 683W. Extreme Power site reckons 383W ... hmmm

Q6600 B0 @3.0ghz, CM V8, GA-P35DS3L, Apogee GT 2X2gig @ 1066mhz, 500+160gig SATAII, XFX GTX280 XXX, CM 600W SilentPro M, Vista SP1,Samsung 2333SW

Are you going to sell someone they only need 400w to run those specs?

Yes. Maximum draw.

But they will obviously need a bigger PSU as PSUs aren't 100% efficient (a 400watt PSU doesn't put out 400watts constant/stable).

Well i don't think it is the size of PSU that matters really, quality i suppose as you say. My 550w antec runs my system which that calculator says i should need 632

Something to do with rails or some kuk, i know very little about psu's though i must admit :D

Yea, I got good amps on th 12v rail, should be able to SLi nicely with my 600W

Yip, you pay for better quality/efficiency. Yeah, amps on the 12v rails is very important.

PSU calcs have to seriously generalise, I mean you get a 500watt PSU like yours with probably 80-90% efficiency, then you get a 700watt no-name brand PSU with less than 70% efficiency.
