Still now news server at Sentech, I take it?

Anyone have any specific suggestions for decent public news servers?

I've found a brilliant news server. Been using it for 2 years now. Good retention and HUGE groups lists.

The "free" account costs $3.95 once off. It's limited to 50MB per day though.

What kind of stuff can you download from a news server? And as such is it really worth paying for?

If the server is a local nntp server does that mean all the files (100s of GB) are hosted on the server? If so then that explains the reluctance..

News servers have been around for absolute ages...

To answer the questions: Yes there is some good info on news groups... actually news groups are somewhat getting replaced by forums like this. Also tons of binary news groups with (images for noone), warez & other proggies ;-)

As to retention - yes, if a news server displays the headers is generally has the full article hosted locally. Some servers - IS used to - showed a VERY complete list of available news groups but only actaully started retrieving data for the news group if one of it's clients actually requested the news group.
